Essay Writing – Showing Evidence



In academic writing, one of the most important techniques is to support your ideas with evidence. Evidence is information which proves that your idea is correct.

Some of the ways that academic writers give evidence are as follows:

1.  Research shows that...
2.  Media reports show that...
3. Scientists believe that...
4. Surveys/statistics show that...

In the IELTS test of course you don’t have time to do any real research so you make it up! Research shows anything you want it to show. The IELTS examiner is not interested in the truth of your evidence but in the English you use and your ability to demonstrate the academic skill of presenting evidence. In university academic essays you need to do real research and quote the author, the publication and page number at the end of the essay. In IELTS this is unnecessary.
