Issue13
Universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study.
Diversified classes can serve for students' knowledge, heart and mind, hence expanding their horizon. In general, it is beneficial for the majority of students. However, if taking a variety of courses becomes compulsory, students will not reap as much benefit as it seems. Therefore, it is not necessary for each one of students learn some courses out of their majors. Taking classes should be based on students' own attitudes and preferences.
To begin with, in general, students should be encouraged to take courses in different subjects. A diversified curriculum provides students more opportunities to earn more. By learning more knowledge in diferent fields, students can get different perspectives, methods and disciplines that they cannot discover in their major. For example, a student who specializes in humanism subject, like history, literature or philosophy, can further his/her study in an unprecedanted way if he/she can spend some time learning other subject which is also in humanism. Anyway, humanism subjects cannot be completely seperated from each other, as the old saying goes.
However, people should not neglect an obvious flaw in the statement that learning different courses is compulsory. Apparently, not all of students deserve diversified classes. For some students, mastering the difficult knowledge in their major, such as maths, physics or chemstry etc,is quite demanding. They have to struggle in endless homework, excercise and presentations in order to get a "A". Leisure time is too luxury to enjoy. Rarely can they afford sparing more time to dabbling other courses that have nothing to do with their major. The more time they used for learning irrelevant subjects, the less time remained that can be used for furthering their study. If the time spent on other fields can be contributed to focus on the major, a lot of valuable work can be finished, such as writing some insightful essays. Therefore, for these students, depth is more significant than diversity. Requiring them to study broadly is putting the cart before horse.
Nor can we deny that choosing courses is purly a matter of individual's freedom, which should not be interfered by their universities. Everyone is endowed with liberty to make their choices. Even if there is no other available courses can be taken, students will still choose to study what they are interested in. In our time, we have TTC, coursera, mooc, wikipedia and so forth. Everyone of them can give us lots of valuable online resources about our favorable domain. Therefore, it is not neceessary for every university to force every student to take courses out of their major.
To sum up, although learning more is always beneficial and should be encouraged, it is inappropriate for every student to do so. In some subjects, focusing on a field is more advisable. Also, students should take their responsibilities of making their own choice, instead of being forced to choose. |
