There are good bands and bad bands in China. Cui Jian's stuff is original. Silverash from Beijing are pretty good as well. There are also bands like the punk band PanGu, and a trip-hop band called Guangzhou Underground.

I think that one thing preventing rock from taking hold in China is the fact that not enough people have heard what decent rock sounds like. To many people, "rock" is the Carpenters (ugh), Richard Marx (do you have any pills to stop me from vomiting?), and maybe Linkin Park (*yawn*). I mean, who here knows the Who, or the Ramones, or even the White Stripes? Not enough...

A lot of people (who consider themselves as Rock bugs) listen to really old soft rock (Carpenters, Beetles, etc. or Limp Bizkit's stuff) and altough it was good back then.. they have no clue on how better the music is NOW... There is the odd people that listens to some good 70's and 80's rock (Doors, Pink Floyd, Hendrix, Guns n' Roses...etc.) but even still, has no clue on the better ones today.

Not enough people actually know of any good rock bands, or good music in general... hence no real knowledge to decide what is good or not good...

Whistling softly in the dark
Is a better cure than anything
For a confused mind searching for an answer

Whistling loudly enough to drown out that little voice inside your head
Is a better way than any other
To prevent miscommunication of feelings

Whistling quickly for a dog
Is a necessary task
If you wish to be a best friend in return

And whistling a tune all your own
Is the only way
To survive this life in one piece

Fran, just recommend some of your favorates and so does syd

I wanna taste into Rock a little bit although I am actually the sort of people whom you refered to as the ignorent of GOOD MUSIC. Sometime I told myself to provide everything around a free space to develop as it will do without my involvement, and by this way I gradually accept their existances, which broaden my ken scope. Besides, some of them even turn out to be my favorates, I cannot explain why this happened, but it really feels good when something you once abhored turn to be some others your enjoy!

So, show me something, probably I may become a Rock & Roller some day... Who knows.

most of them succccccks...

as for chinese bands, considering my inclination to punk bands, I support these bands follows: new pants, pangu, joyside and cold blooded animal. lao cui is dead as dead. and silverash... I am not quite interested in their style, which emphasizes on the vision shock.

I initiated my rock life by listening to chinese metal bands such as Tang Dynasty and Overload, however, except for the first release of Tang Dynasty, I began to feel nothing about their music immediately when I got touch with the music from the sawed (crack) tapes and cds smuggled into China. I think words cannot express how I feel that time, when I enjoyed the brand new music from my favorate bands: blind melon, offspring(it is said that the lead vocal of these f**kers is a phd of bio... )nirvana, neilyoung, beck, iggy pop, david bowie, lou reed, pink floyd, joydivision, sparklehorse.... it is like I have found my compass for my life .

compared with western rockers, chinese rockers are full of fakers, I think. I have some friends who acclaims that they are in the "circle of rock", and what they feel is that most of rockers in that circle are ignorant of the essence of rock, most of them are just make rock kind of game rather that treating it like faith or religion.    remmerber that song by Pangu--"摇滚圈,是个猪圈"  that song is the best and ept illustration of chinese rock.

some other indie rocker in china are good. have u ever heard of Humage and his website www.rmage.com. I go there alot.

hey, fran, it is reaaaaally happy be get to know u and I cannot wait to know more, u know what, u are the first girl I met on the net who knows so much about rock .

test: can  u guess the origin of my ID??

BTW: punxzone is the best site!!!!

Most Chinese punk bands are poser punks. I take few of their music. However, Chinese bands are trying too hard to be somebody that they are not, they care too much of what people think about them and their music, which is just not punk. Punks don't care what people think of them. But it's ok, I don't think that those people should be made fun of.

All over the websites you hear "They aren't punk", "poser punks" and "Are they really true punks?" Why is everyone so concerned? You can't help what you like, but you can be teased for liking a certain "poser" type of music? I don't think so.

I started to play the piano when I was only 3-year-old. Can you imagine a little baby as such sitting on the chair for 10 hours per day and never managed to get out of the room or even being locked for whole day long? That's my hell-like childhood! At that time, I have few friends, however, my parents are kind to me; they bought me records from overseas, which probably changed my whole life. From then on, music is the only friend of mine, I was so deep in those old Rock n' Roll records my parents bought me, I first heard the Sex Pistols when I was like seven, and "The Beach boys, The Beetles, Rolling Stones, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Eagles, The Clash, Pennywise…etc" are the only persons I can talk with…

Thus, I listen to punk all the time...and the only reason is that it's good listening. I don't hate my life or want to be an anarchist, I just like the music! Punk music is great, and actually has a meaning. There's no songs that make me wanna hurl up my lunch because the words "sexy" or "baby" are mentioned more than 50 times a minute.

Most people only define "Punk" by the clothes that you wear. But in my viewpoint, Converse is not what makes you punk. I don't believe it's about image. I think it's about being comfortable enough to just BE yourself. I listen to punk because it expresses my feelings. To me, punk is an attitude. That's why it's such a big deal to me.

I think it's stupid that people only listen to certain bands because they've seen them on MTV so they MUST be cool, when in truth, some of the most talented bands most people have never even heard of.

Let's take Good Charlotte as an example. A lot of people are saying that Good Charlotte is not a punk band, they are a pop band, or as I read on one magazine "They are employees of MTV." They think Good Charlotte is so concerned about image.

As far as Good Charlotte goes, I like them for who they are and what their past has done for them and their music. Although it's not my favorite band, at least they are out there making their music instead of making fun of others.  :o

I am so tired of everyone being like "ohhhh! Good Charlotte are posers". Good Charlotte worked their asses off to get to where they are and we shall be respectful of all their hard work and what they've gone through. I think the people who call other people posers don't even know why they're calling them that. Whenever I ask someone why they think Good Charlotte is a poser they replied like "They just are." or don't come up with a good reason.

Did those dudes who criticize Good Charlotte know that when the twins were younger, their dad leaving wasn't the only bad thing? They lived in a barn for a long time and had to raise money for their family by getting jobs very young. And then they went to live with their guitarist Billy, a person who just happened to see them performming and liked them. A total stranger!! Those judgmental dudes have not had this much hardship, for that I am sure. And for all their years of suffering, we should be proud and happy for them that they have made it this far to touch our hearts.

Plus, syd, I'm honored to be the first girl you met online who hold some viewpoints about Rock. As for your ID, I guess it refers to Syd Barrett, Pink Floyd, Australia.  :)

Danny, I'm glad you wanna try some Rock stuff. And trust me, you will be inspired by some of the originals.  :)

enjoying ramones, I am in motion~~~

Fran, fran, fran is a big surprise to me .:)

punk is the way u live ur wicked life. I never wear any rock T-shirts in the public, as for converse, I think it may be the only exception, u know, a lot of pop=music lover also wear that shoe, for me, it is more the habit than the style I am trying to empress others that I am a punk. on this point, let shake hands.

I also agree with u on the concept of real or fake punk. a lot of rockers say offspring is "pop-punk", which is not genuine. However, like ur feeling of GC, my attitude toward Offspring is that their songs do make sense to me. I don't care about others on this point. there are always some music critics making money by "judging" bands in their "professional" angles, here we may ask, what grant u that status to present ur biased views to the rockers who are possiblly more convicted to their religion?

my parents always object me on buying rock records, and they laugh at me when I told them that punk is my religion. at that moment, "never mind:" always flash in my mind. in my early days of being a rocker, I buy any records that I was interested in, the attractive cover of the records, the recommendation of my fellows, or some critics on the net. However, some days later, punk became the exclusive chooice to me, though sometimes I still try some other genres such as glam rock, country music...finally, I am in a state that only the mind flow in the songs is the reason that I make the artist or the songs my favorate.

I used to be a clarion player in middleschool, I have to admit that I am not quite good at it, but the training did help me know more about the essence of music. some classics, such as beethoven and vivaldi, inspired me alot. I think ur early expereince of piano will do the same for u.

rock is my whole life, esp punk. honestly, I am not quite a guy of science study. and my performance at school is so not good to make me a student of a national key univ, where I can get a relatively better edu.(however, Uestc is also not quite a good univ.) during my senior 3 days, the only impetus for me to hold on is my belief. I don't know if u have watched that movie "colckwork orange". the music by beethoven in that movie, the <<fate>>, resued me from suicide. it grants me power. and sid vicious teaches me to give the world where I am struggling in a finger. at last I survived. can't imagine my life without punk, without music.

more, I think when talking about chiness rock, the "3 magic stone elites"--zhang chu, heyong(the very first punk in china)and dowei(dead as dead) cannot be ignored. ;)

fran, what if we were in the same city!!. I wanna share u with my favorate song by syd,    which is the song I and my 3 other bros of high school enjoy each time we gather since high school. some thing like prey together. :D

u already made a song link, so I just put the lyrics here, I guess u have that album.

the lyrics: wish you were here

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell
Blue skies from pain
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war
for a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl
year after year

Running over the same old ground
What have we found?
The same old fears
Wish you were here

btw:u are so lucky that u get to know sex pistols when u are 7

As the matter of fact, piano is the backbone all through my life not just an early experience as you mentioned. All the prizes, medals and certificates I v got deserves what I v been dedicating. I hanged those reputations on the wall, staring at them with my soul, wondering who indeed understand what is behind the curtain.

Most people think that Rockers appeals to Rock music because they are against the world. If so, I might be the only exception. To me, rock music helps me ward off the cruel reality and convinces me that there is still something nice out there. This might be in connections with my experiences earlier back in childhood. I had no chance to make any good friends, no chance to play games like other kids did, no chance to speak to anyone ‘cause I’m home alone during the “office hour”, no chance to be allowed to leave my piano for one sec during the 10-hour-practise everyday… everything around me seemed so plain, and I even dared not to stop playing the piano, ‘cause I was afraid of the dead silence the moment I stopped.

With the time goes, smile became the last thing that appears on my face. Then music records swarmed into me, which were all bought from the United States since my Daddy had frequent visits there. I started to listen to the music of all genres. Obviously, I didn’t really understand what they were singing or who was singing, I just so enjoyed the music, the beat, the brand new enthusiasm that came to me. From then on, I didn’t frightened to stop playing my piano any more, for the reason that I knew there would never be any dead silence haunting me.

With the zeal for music rises up, I didn’t get bored any longer when practicing the piano, life was not as hard as before.  :)

I won my first medal at 5-year-old in Japan. In that contest, I was the youngest kid that got a prize. I cried out loud through the microphone when being awarded on the stage, seeking the eyes of my parents among the audiences, at that moment, I suddenly realized the power of music! I could not achieve it without the inspiration and motivation of music, this is what I always think.

Later in my life, I got several prizes and certificates with the accompanying of music. Gradually, those music plus lyrics began to make sense to me, so that when I played the records in the player, the first thing came up to my mind was a sound yelling “oh, this is it!”

For the first time of my life, I founded a pop-rock band in high school, and acted as the keyboard---soul of the band. We gathered twice a week, matching chords on the songs we actually wrote ourselves. Nothing could make us happier than playing and singing the thoughts came out of our soul.

Our band ran pretty well until the guitarist (my first boyfriend) tore my heart into pieces. He was the first boy I v ever loved and tasted the feeling of being loved. Believe it or not, he dumped me after our 2 years relationship and dated with my BEST friend the day after we broke up.:mad:I was burnt and dismissed the band ignoring the opposers. The scar left on my heart even hurts now.

Then came the second time of my life, I dug so deeply into music, infrequently smiled, and kept studying very hard. It is music that saved me again from all the pains and nightmares.

All through my school days, I v been the piano accompanist of the school chorus with no exceptions.

As my world view gradually getting onto a settled track, I know that music was/is/will be my savior all through my life. I have to admit that I’m fragile and sensitive, but I never feel so up on the stage or behind the music. I hope my words can inspire you something you don’t know before. To tell the truth, this is the sound from my soul.

syd, I have a question, are you intimately involved with the Chinese punk rock scene? If so, then why is it that so many bands rail against "rock stars" in their lyrics, even though there aren't nearly as many rock stars in China as there are pop stars?

I don't want to grow up

as our conversation goes to this very point, I want to confess about my attitude of my life and my misson I am try to fuifill. I believe that, like Napolien said to himself when he was young, there are always some one who are desitined to be something of the comets, they are doomed to burn themselves out to lighten their centuries. I thnk mine, is to be the Thomas More of my centuries, that is, to build up a utopia in the pacific. the nation, which needs a lot of money to be found, will require me to work hard to become among the richest guy in the world first. In the Utopia, I can gather the elites from our planet, delicate to find the essence of existence of human beings. rockers, scientists and all other elites will be together to change the world and evolve. the civilization will be propeled significantly. This is my final purpose of life.

So, different from my bros, I choose to be an entreprenue instead of being an artist. one of my bro, who is now a student of digital art, is now in Beijing Institute of Broadcasting. I do admire his lfe, for he can do the things he like and most wanted to. for me, my reason to work and study is so pragmatic that I seldom enjoy the process rather than the results. I think though rock music does make sense to some people, most of them are just complaints of the rocker's lives or there dissatisfaction of the current world. They lack power to change anything, they only help ones who like them or believe in them. I choose to change sth. I simply think that to the mass, Bill Gates will be much more influential than kurt cobain. what if Bill tell the parents: let ur children listen to rock music, they will do good to them? I think most of the parents will consider this issue. I think if u want change them, first u have to be excel according to their criterion. right??

the process is painful. immediatly I v chosed my way, I began to inhibit my desire to be rocker who can live like a rocker. I mean, I dare not to touch my electrical guitar anymore, I dare not go to rock performance frequently, I dare not to go to the gathering of our univ.'s guitar association. U can imagine how painful it is. I have no choise. one reason that I choose not to go to the univs in Beijing is that this place is the centre of rock and roll of our country. I am afraid of becoming a rocker in Shucun village where rockers from all over our country go to realize their dream in the capital. I choose my univ in chengdu though my teachers suggest me to go to Buaa. I don't regrect. it is just my choice.I think I am right. just as the song by nirvana, "you know you are right".

fate or something, rockers seldom have easy love affairs. too extreme or too sensitive, makes us too vulnerable to emotional problems. in my view, the guy who dumped u is the foolishest one in the universe. however, u have to realize may be it is because u two don't match at all. the scar, will finally be cured when u find the one who can really have mental engagment with u. for me, I have mentioned my 3-day-love-affair at my college. that girl, when first met, impressed me by her serenity showen on her face at an economic lecture by a famous taiwan economist. I rushed out the lecture hall when it was finished. I wanted to get to know her more but I told myself that I have my mission. I choose to be stoic and self constraint. However, the second time I met her, in a second hand book store where I often went there for expired issues of <<global entreprenue>>, she was reading a magazine named <<new wave>>, a local chengdu published issue of contemporary art and rock. I could not suppress my wiiling to talk to her, and I finally began to talk to her. although my scar still hurts now, I have to admit that night is the best night I have experienced in college. we talked about rock, she told me that she liked punk only, we talked about philosophy, she told me she was fond of Nietszche, we talked about overseas study, she told me that Us is the exclusive choice for her... it is lke a male zealot met up with a famale one....however, it is not the truth, she is not what she told me she wants to be. she lied. I may tell u the details after my gre test later. I tell u this just to mean that u are not the only rocker suffers from love hurts. so be strong , coz u still have ur faith. ;)

I am not so intimate with the chinese punk as u think. conversely, I have some repungnance to them. one of my friends from chongqing, who have intimate relationship with the punx there, told me something about them, he said that they are not really delicated to their music. as pangu said, the rock circle in china is far from being sublime and pure.as for their negatve reviews of the rocker stars, maybe being like that somewhat make them feels of a higer positon towards the real great rocker.B4 them...

oi~

we really should communicate more after my test, I have to apologize for not meditating thoroughly when replying to u, coz I stiiiiill  have heavy studying burdens. forgive me. plz. :D

Danny GG, don't take me wrong, There is neither absolute GOOD nor absolute NOT GOOD. I think all the songs you sent me are well done, and I never ignore any good music of other genres. They might not be my type, but some of them really impress me a lot. Actually, the TYPE thing is determined by too many factors, if I haven't been locked in the room for that long when I was little, I may never get a chance to taste punk or rock n' roll, who knows? So don't take this too big a deal... :)
