Technology is a necessary but not always a positive force in modern life.

There is a public controversy over the function of technology in modern life. The speaker in the title remains neutral in this argument while some people may have a blind faith in technology. On balance, I would side with the former opinion.

Undoubtedly, technology is a necessary force, without which contemporary society could not survive for even one day. Not only the impact of technology on daily life but also the development and uses of technological innovations benefit all sectors of society. In industrial circle, computers that can operate whole factories make it possible for us to manipulate the product lines with a fraction of workers. As the time of making a product drops to a few days—if not less, engineers may soon be free to let their imaginations soar without being penalized by the poor mechanical facilities. In addition, insofar as the medical field, the term high technology is associated with advanced equipment, emergency measure, and healing scheme. The diseases, such as smallpox, lepra, phtisis, that made us shudder at the thought in the pioneering days can never dread us any more. It is impossible for us to make more than the widest guess at how our lives would be if it were not for the presence of technology, but one thing is certain: everything would be going to a mess. We owe a lot to the inventors and researchers who contributed to bring convenience and effectiveness to our lives by means of highly technological achievement. It was thanks to Thomas Edison--the outstanding inventor of light--that we started a great new era in human history. On the 100th anniversary of Edison’s birth, people cherished the memory of him by means of spending a whole day with all the lights off. From that moment can we clearly realized the fear of dark by instinct and appreciated the contribution of Edison by heart.

Although technological advances have produced tremendous improvement in the quality of human life, they have often had negative consequences as well. In the first place, new technologies often cause new forms of pollution and environmental stress. Pollution may be defined as the addition to the environment of agents that are potentially damaging the welfare of humans or other organism. One example of environmental stress resulting from technology is the surprising finding that winter fish killed in Wisconsin lakes were caused by snowmobiles. The snowmobile is a technological innovation with a variety of potential uses that can bring considerable profits. However, the loss caused by the contamination is incredible, which breaks the balance of organism severely and overweighs the benefits in the long run. In the second place, new technologies can bring to evil purposes on occasion. Let us take our view to Elbert Einstein, whose special and general theories of relativity formed a theoretical base for the exploitation of atomic energy. Unexpectedly, the giant felt compunction bitterly in his old age in that his theories is the inevitable attribution to nuclear weapons, which turned out to be a catastrophe to human beings undoubtedly.

All in all, it should be noted that the effects of technologies are not always positive. The phrase technological dualism is sometimes used to refer to the fact that technological changes amount to a double-edged sword. While they would serve as propulsion to the development of human history, at the same time it might serve to ask us for the cost of abusing. The optimal approach, in my view, is a balanced one for anticipating and preventing the negative consequences of new technologies.
