CHANGES OF ADDRESS
1. If since the time of making application to the State Board of Law Examiners for admission to the Bar exami- nation (or for certification of your legal education for admission on motion without examination) and prior to your certification by the State Board of Law Examiners to an Appellate Division Department you change your address, you must notify the Board by October 15th for a July exam and April 15th for a February exam using its online change of address form at www.nybarexam.org/ChangeofAddressRequest.html.

2. If you change your address after certification by the State Board of Law Examiners but before you are admitted, you should promptly notify the appropriate Appellate Division Department of such change by letter. The change of address should be sent to the filing office of the Appellate Division to which you are certified and/or where your application is filed.

3. After you are admitted, changes of address should be sent to the Attorney Registration Unit, General Post Office, P.O. Box 29327, New York, New York 10087-9327 or email to attyreg@nycourts.gov.

TRANSFERS OF APPLICATIONS (SEE CPLR 9403)
If, after certification by the State Board of Law Examiners but before you are admitted, you obtain a residence in another Appellate Division Department, you may request a transfer of your application to the new Department; also, if you do not reside in New York State and obtain full-time employment in the State, you may request a transfer to the Department of such full-time employment. You may also request a transfer on undue hardship grounds. A transfer request should be made in writing to the Appellate Division Department to which you have been certified.

All applicants are required to undergo an interview by a member or members of the Appellate Division Com- mittees on Character and Fitness prior to admission. You will be informed in a timely manner of the date and place of your interview.

REGISTRATION
Before admission to the Bar, you must register with the Office of Court Administration as an attorney by filing a form registration statement and paying the $375 biennial registration fee (see Judiciary Law § 468-a; 22 NYCRR Part 118). You will be provided the necessary forms during the admission process.

PRO BONO REQUIREMENT
On September 14, 2012, the New York State Court of Appeals adopted a new rule requiring applicants who successfully pass the bar examination in New York State to perform 50 hours of pro bono services before applying for admission to practice. Applicants seeking admission to practice after January 1, 2015, must demonstrate compliance with this requirement. The Juris Doctor degree (J.D. or JD), also known as the Doctor of Jurisprudence degree (D.Jur. or DJur), is a graduate-entry professional degree in law[1][2][3][4][5] and one of several Doctor of Law degrees. It is earned by completing law school in the United States, Canada, Australia, and some other common law countries. It is regarded as a bachelor's degree in Canada, a master's degree in Australia and a professional doctorate in the United States.

The degree was first awarded in the United States in the early 20th century and was created as a modern version of the old European doctor of law degree (such as the Dottore in Giurisprudenza in Italy and the Juris Utriusque Doctor in Germany and central Europe).[14] Originating from the 19th century Harvard movement for the scientific study of law, it is a degree that in most common law jurisdictions is the primary professional preparation for lawyers. It involves a three-year program in most jurisdictions.[15][16]

To be authorized to practice law in the courts of a given state in the United States, the majority of individuals holding a J.D. degree must pass a bar examination.[17][18][19][20] The state of Wisconsin, however, permits the graduates of its two law schools to practice law in that state, and in its state courts, without having to take its bar exam - a practice called "diploma privilege" - provided they complete the courses needed to satisfy the diploma privilege requirements. In the United States, passing an additional bar exam is not required of lawyers authorized to practice in at least one state to practice in the national courts of the United States, courts commonly known as "federal courts". Lawyers must, however, be admitted to the bar of the federal court before they are authorized to practice in that court. Admission to the bar of a federal district court includes admission to the bar of the related bankruptcy court.

Etymology and abbreviations
In the United States, the professional doctorate in law may be conferred in Latin or in English, as Juris Doctor and at some law schools Doctor of Law (J.D. or JD),[21] or Doctor of Jurisprudence (D.Jur. or DJur), respectively.[22] "Juris Doctor" literally means "Teacher of Law", while the Latin for "Doctor of Jurisprudence"—Jurisprudentiae Doctor—literally means "Teacher of Legal Knowledge".

The J.D./D.Jur. is not to be confused with Doctor of Laws or Legum Doctor (LLD or LL.D.). In institutions where the latter can be earned, e.g. Cambridge University, it is a research doctorate representing a level of work equivalent to a PhD and well beyond a taught degree such as the J.D. The LL.D. is invariably an honorary degree in the United States.
