这句话乍一看觉得好长啊，感觉好深奥。实际上句子的主干在第一句话就清楚了：These questions are political (in the sense of sth).

至于究竟是在什么层面上导致这些个问题带有政治性呢？下面这个就是理解的难点了。

书中译文参考：

这些问题之所以带有政治性质，因为不可避免地围绕这些问题展开的急诊与其说是一种在客观冷静科研精神指导下对抽象问题的探索，倒不如说是一种学术上的权力斗争。在此斗争中，许多女学者——只是在现在才开始以众多的人数进入学术界——的学术生涯和职业命运将处于存亡攸关的危急关头，与她们相伴随着的是对人文理解做出一种独特贡献的机遇，这一贡献则很有可能成为消除我们社会中所存在的性别主义的一股重要影响。

读完这段译文，我整个人都不好了。这尼玛有谁看得懂这段话究竟在讲什么？问题出在哪里？
……与她们相伴随着的是对人文理解做出一种独特贡献的机遇，……

这个“她们”翻译错了。
“with them”的“them”并非指"women"，而是指这些女性学者的学术生涯和职业命运，"those women's careers and professional fortunes"。归根结底是用with them，替代了前面一大串careers and fortunes，并且省略了will also be at stake.我把这句话重新写一下，就能看得清楚了：

the debate will be less A than B.

the debate (over them) will inevitably be less (an exploration of abstract matters) in a spirit of disinterested inquiry than (an academic power struggle )in which the careers and professional fortunes of many women scholars…will be at stake，and with them the chances for …….(will also be at stake).

这些问题之所以带有政治性，是因为围绕这些问题所展开的辩论，与其说是以一种客观求证的精神来探讨抽象问题，不如说是一种学术上的权力斗争。在此斗争中，不少女学者——这里指的是那些刚刚进入学术界的众多女学者——她们的学术生涯将岌岌可危；同时她们也极有可能失去对人文理解领域做出自己独特贡献的机会。这些贡献，原本是可能有力打击到我们社会中所存在的性别歧视现象的。

个人点评：
不知道大家怎么看的，本来一眼望去还算迷迷糊糊可以明白的意思，看了参考译文之后只觉得一头浆糊。

Yet those (who stress the achievement of a general consensus among the colonists) cannot fully understand that consensus (without understanding the conflicts that had to be overcome or repressed in order to reach it).

这个句子的主干：
those (historians) cannot fully understand a consensus without doing sth.

尽管史学家们都强调殖民者之间（就某个问题）肯定普遍达成了共识，但如果他们不能认识到这个矛盾的存在，就无法完全理解这个共识的本质。因为（那些殖民者）只有在解决或者压制这些矛盾冲突之后才能达成共识。
