------正文------
In this title, the speaker takes a facial glance at our modern society and makes an unwarranted conclusion that the primary goal of technological advancement should be to increase people's efficiency so that everyone has more leisure time. However, in this assertion, both the cause and its alleged result are not the fact.
One of the results of technological advancement is the increased efficiency though; it needs not to be the primary goal. However, the question that what is the final purpose then, which troubles many philosophies nowadays, may have no proper answer even in the near future, as the technological advancement veils and torts human nature. Actually, if to increase the efficiency is a direct aim of developing technology, it is not achieved well. An example of automation in big factories illustrates here well. With more robots are adopted in the streamline in manufactory industry, our productivity relies more on the computer and some other electrical systems. Unfortunately, electric shortage become a severe problem day by day, as 'black-out' in parts of North America brought great loss not only to industry, but also make peoples everyday life in to inconvenience. What is more, computer virus may invade the controlling system of the factory, and destroy the whole assembling line. All of these are impressive disadvantages that breed the opposite results of the purpose of increasing efficiency.
Even if the automation assembling lines do work well and is really more efficient, it is not necessarily grant everyone more leisure time. On one hand, human nature does not allow us to take a rest for too long a period, though maybe there is any, on the way seeking for more profit, for the aggressive and greed part that roots deeply in it. As soon as we achieved the near future goal, another is set; maybe right doing the period we are enjoying the leisure time increased by the former success.
On the other hand, the profit increased is seized mostly by the few in the society rather than everyone. Again, lets have a look at the situation of workers, whose jobs are taken by the robots and machines. It is true that the total profit of the society is increased, and maybe the wage each worker earn with less working hours also raise, however, the true value of these amount of money is decreased, compared to the higher and higher price for living material. Without an insured income, they have to looking for other works, usually par time ones, and laboring all day long, only living a life form hand to mouth. Where are their leisure times left? Without a guaranteed life, no one will think about leisure time.
Thinking about what I mention above, the conclusion that our society is pacing quicker and quicker for the sake of the development of technology. In some field and sometimes, the efficiency is increased, while under some other conditions, the fact is ironically the opposite. And what is more, there is no more leisure time than before, not only for those whose living recourses cannot be insured, but also for those who benefit a lot from the technological advancement. |
