With the development of science and technology, people have been more and more efficient in fulfilling their work. No one could deny that this increase in efficiency do not owe to technological advancement, but the ironical fact is that people have fewer leisure than ever before in spite of it.
To begin with, technology has been developed mainly for bringing convenience and comfort to people's daily life. Admit it or not, this goal has been achieved to a large extent. First, the application of science has extricated humans from heavy physical and repetitive work, which earned them a large amount of extra time, or say, life. Large engines can carry tons of cargos at ease, which once would take hundreds of porters weeks or months to complete; with the help of airplanes, it is entirely possible for one who often has to go abroad to save tens of hours per week. Moreover, the invention of computers has also liberated us from complex calculating work, which they can do much faster and more accurate than us, leaving us enough time devoting to creation and other constructive work.
Secondly, one does not have to go very far to find that modern people have created much more material wealth than our ancestors are still upgrading this ability, with the support of which, human could have more money and resources to enjoy themselves.
However, much as we may pride ourselves on our efficiency and material contributions, we have not benefit from them by enjoying more leisure time. Today's intense competition has made it impossible for anyone to have as much leisure time as he/she like. To survive and thrive in the world, one should not only accomplish the basic work as quickly as possible, but also have to spend most of the rest time in learning more, working more, and improving himself/herself to the largest extent. Such is an irony that the most efficient people in our society are most likely to have the least extra time. Bill Gate, the leader of Microsoft, has to work till one or two o'clock at night and goes to work at the same time as others. George W. Bush, the president of America, must work all day long according to his strict schedule, which renders him away from his leisure time. Although many people have increasingly accumulated material gains, they hardly have time to enjoy them.
Additionally, modern technology have created a lot of new-born problems that our predecessor never need to cope with, such as the worldwide environmental pollution, drug abuse that spoils people especially youngsters, and terrorism that endangers all of the nations that appreciate peace. Instead of playing and relaxing ourselves while we have free time, we had better strive more for the solution of these hardened problems, otherwise we might some day lose our chances of enjoying leisure time for ever.
To sum up, part of the goal of the technology have been realized by improving our life and work though unavoidably, the increase in efficiency has not result in more leisure time for humans to enjoy. Nevertheless, maybe it is not bad news, for what is most important for us it to create a better world for humans to live in with our own effort but not to rest on the established world sustained by modern technology. |
