(from Karen Rodi)
Aside from the difficulty of tracking the outcomes of our graduates (there are over 120 every year), I am not at liberty to disclose detailed placement information to students not yet in the program. The most common starting positions for our MAEP and MA in Economics graduates are as economic analysts or research associates in the consulting and financial industries.
We have been very successful in PhD placements, even though this is not the exclusive mission of our program; nor is it the path chosen by the majority of our graduates. In this and the last four years they have been admitted to: UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, U. Michigan, U. Wisconsin, U of Texas, Penn State U., Ohio State U, Arizona State U, U of Indiana (Bloomington), Purdue, U. of Washington (Seattle), U. of Chicago, U. Penn, NYU, BU, U. of Rochester, Georgetown, Harvard Kennedy School, University of Warwick (UK), amongst others.
We provide many channels to boost our MA students' academic training and credentials, which will increase their competitiveness in PhD and other post-graduate applications. To begin with, we offer a very extensive collection of (exclusively) MA elective courses taught by our research faculty - 9-12 per semester. This is quite unique amongst master's programs. Then, based on their intellectual preparation and inclination, and subject to departmental advice and approval, students with PhD aspirations can take graduate courses from the math department, or PhD level courses in economics, as well as pursue independent research and scholarship in Directed Studies courses under the supervision of individual faculty members. As our research faculty is heavily committed to our MA program, there is ample opportunity for all these endeavors.
Starting a few years ago, we also have a RA-Mentor program in the Spring and Summer semesters. Under this program, Master's students are selected on a merit basis to serve as research assistants to faculty members or advanced PhD candidates (under the overall supervision of their faculty adviser). While the RA-appointment carries a modest stipend, the primary purpose of the program is to provide additional research training, experience and credentials to students with sound academic preparation that help to further their job search or PhD application.
MA as well as MAEP students also have the opportunity of taking courses from the Graduate School of Management. This helps further to prepare them for the job market.
The MAEP degree has a well-defined structure: Economics Core (4 mandatory courses), Management Core (2 courses from a wide selection), Two Fields (2 course each) and Additional Electives (2 courses).
In the one-year MA program, a student is required to take only 4 core and 4 elective courses. We will discuss the details at curricular advising during orientation, based on each student's situation, preparation and aspiration. But in choosing the elective curriculum there are two alternative approaches: (1) Aim for a broad, well-rounded perspective in economics; or (2) Build up a depth of knowledge in specific fields. As mentioned, we offer a very extensive collection of (exclusively) master’s elective courses taught by our research faculty - 9-12 per semester - so we have ample ability to satisfy students in both camps.
I hope this information is helpful. |
