just go bank where you opened your account and tell them you are first year student of && University. You want to get a credit card. Normally, banks have special credit card plan for student who have no credit history there. They will assign you a limit credit depending on your yearly income ( if you got scholarship from university, the income is your scholarship). The only problem is you can't get very high credit limit becasue you are newer to their country. But I think what they can offer is good enough for your daily expense.
I got one student credit card from Fleet Bank.

I opened an account in bank one too
I think their debt card is enough.

debt card  is not a credit card
it will bot give you any good in building a credit history

also , if someone stole your debt card
you will lose all of your money

so get a credit card as soon as possible
donot use debt card quite often

看来美加还是不一样 我认识挺多朋友在加拿大没有credit card 一样过的挺好的
