African swine fever (ASF) is a highly contagious haemorrhagic viral disease of domestic and wild pigs, which is responsible for serious economic and production losses. During outbreaks and in affected countries, control of ASF can be difficult. Classic sanitary measures may include early detection and humane killing of animals (with proper disposal of carcases and waste); thorough cleansing and disinfection; zoning and movement controls; surveillance and detailed epidemiological investigation; and strict biosecurity measures on farms. China is the world’s largest pork market. However, the deadly ASF virus is continuing to spread through China, with the total number of affected provinces rising to 22. The country normally relies on imports to cover its demand for pork, but Beijing slapped 25% duties on American pork in July as the countries traded tariffs. It aimed to fill the gap by increasing domestic production, but the ASF outbreak stymied that plan. Discuss the impacts of the ASF on China’s economy.
