Practicality is now our great idol, which all powers and talents must serve. Anything that is not obviously practical has little value in today's world.

Admittedly, we emphasized greatly on practicality, which is valuable in many circumstances especially nowadays. However, I don't agree with the author that all powers and talents must serve practicality. The idea that anything that is not obviously practical has little value in today's world is too much ....and maybe ultimately undermine the original purpose.

To some sense conceiving a practical attitude is an effective way to do many things. It sometimes a good character that need courage and facilities, because practicality means breaking the conservative ways and risking the failure. The one who can resolve problems especially the important events seems to be famous in the history or at least successful. There are superfluous of examples of this kind. Mr. Deng Xiaoping is famous for his style of practicality. He is not adhere to the conservative doctrines and routines but to analyze problem in its own term. His many policies is with the motive  of developing economy and make money. The facts proves that his attitude is very wisdom and helpful in china. Another proper example is about Tomas Edison. He had thousands of inventions in his life, for example the gramophone and bulb, which are the most useful things in our daily lives. This is also the most remarkable character of his inventions. And this practicality of the inventions benefit both the people all over the world and himself, which made him a lot of money.

On the other hand, too much emphasis on practicality, which all powers and talents must serve as the speaker says, may bring serious consequences. we human beings have make a lot of mistakes due to the short profit in lack of considering the result. The  environmental problem is one of the most serious problem. Many profit-seeking factories just concern about their profit and neglect the air and water pollution which caused by their actions. The excessive cutting wood has turned the forest into desert and also causes weather problems. The illegal hunting of wild animals has caused the extinction of the precious species. Actually, most of the practical actions have side-effects more or less, we must assure that the side-effect should not bring much harm to the society.

Actually, many of the seemingly unpractical actions  can bring great benefit to the society. For example the investment in scientific research, it is usually costing and  period is very long, what is more the result can not be predict. However this unpractical investment is significant in promoting the development of the human society. No one can imagine that according to the  Einstein's succinct equation: E=mc2, people make powerful atomic bomb. Another example: Bayer, one of the largest pharmaceutic companies in the world, announced that the company would cease production of the one of its major products, because of the hazardous ingredients it contained. This seemingly unpractical action made the company suffer great loss in profitability, but gains strong public support and understanding, which can contribute to the long-term success of the company.

In sum, we can't simply evaluate the function of practicality. It serves as a double-edged sword. We should analyze the situation in its own term..

另外，可以考虑先定义Practicality.（或者说很难说一个东西是实用的还是不实用的，没标准）
个人认为不实际的东西-->精神文明。实际的东西-->物质享受。因此不实际（严格讲不直接实际还是会有用的）。例如：研究人类起源对我们日常生活没影响但是有助于我们了解人类本身。
