Society does not place enough emphasis on the intellect—that is, on reasoning and other cognitive skills.

Intellect, defined as the capacity for rational thought, includes reasoning ability, analysis and problem-solving skills, and what's more, creative thinking. While I agree with the author on the basis that our society does place much emphasis on reasoning ability and analysis, but I disagree that it has placed the same emphasis on problem-solving skill and creative thinking.

Let's begin with our school system. As we know, most primary and secondary schools employ uniform curriculums designed by  authority of education. Such uniform curriculums usually contend mathematics, English, history and so forth, but they often exclude arts and music. It is know that arts and music play a considerable role to outlet children's emotions. When children paint, draw, manipulate tools, they learn to appreciate our world; when children scribble, clap and sing, they learn to express their own feelings. And mathematics, history which aim to grow children's knowledge in number, shape and chorology of events help children build on perceptual and cognitive learning. Because students have to take examinations in the latter courses, those curriculums often have priority over the former ones. Then we can see, in one sense, uniform courses indeed strengthen our reasoning ability, analysis, but in another sense, they make us lack of emotional training such as arts, music that may lead to creative thinking.

Then let's go to see the business world and our real lives. Look at our surroundings, no matter in working places or in our personal apartments, we are crowded with so many machines as well as devices: fax machine, copy machines, computers, CD player, PDA , TV...it is impossible to list all of them. People are who run a company or who work for a company must learn to use those machines, they work on them to do business, to chat with friends, to take conference at home, to buy groceries on line and so on .At a glance, they make our lives more convenient and easy, but we seem to rely on them so much that our own problem-solving skill is weakened and weakened. The more machines we have in our daily lives, the more helpless we see in ourselves. A few days ago, one of my friends almost became crazy, because the hard board of his computer crashed. It took away all his company data, his favorite movies and music as well as his beloved photos. Facing such a mass, he can do nothing but be sad. Not only him but also we own must have experienced the same things, think of all the times we lost our mobile phones, or think of the tines we forgot our secret codes at the ATM, or the times we sent e-mail to the wrong person by mistake, we are so frustrated. Society emphasize on our intelligence to work on those machines, because they may advance our lives standards in great leaps. But they, to some extent, weaken our problem-solving ability at the same time, make us helpless.

One thing we must be aware, that creative thinking and problem-solving skill are as important as logical thinking and analysis. No matter how much knowledge one has, one matter how critical one's mind is, if he or she lacks the ability of imagination and creation, he or she is just like bird without wings; if he or she always feels confused in front of problems, turn to others for help, he or she is just like fish which can't swing.

To sum up, our society really places much emphasis on our intelligence. But so-called intelligence is incomplete, without creation thinking and problem-solving skill, people are not all-rounded. So our society should make a balance among each factor the real intelligence contains, because this is the kind of intelligence our society really needs.
