History teaches us only one thing: knowing about the past cannot help people to make important decisions today.
Outline:
1, History helps to form decisions today
2, History prevent us from repeating mistakes
3, History helps to predict future state.
How do people make decisions at present days if they do not refer to the history for assistance? Just based on the assumptions of future would-be effects? Or what? In this issue, I disagree with this statement as there are good reasons to believe that the past plays an essential part in forming one's decisions and also contributes to other aspects as well.
Firstly, history assists people to make paramount decisions in different aspects of our life. As history is like a massive data base containing solutions to various matters, we should always refer to the past to unravel any complication encountered. To illustrate this point, take the British legal system for instance. The conviction of a misconduct made by judge and jury is largely based on precedents; in other words, what the judge tend to do is quest analogous cases taken place in the past and by assessing the prior resolutions to those cases, a conclusive verdict would be agreed on the present proceedings. Furthermore, not only do consequential decisions need historic backup, minor ones do as well. It can often been observed in businesses that as managers encounter any dilemma concerning, say, whether or not investing a certain project, the very first thing they would do is sail through past cases for any comparable ones that would guide them to identify any possible success or failure in order to reach a fair decision. Therefore, the past definitely plays a tremendous role in today's decision making scenario.
Not only could the past help in formulating decisions, they are used more and more in preventing people from collapsing on the same matter years later. The history alerts us that certain affairs would lead to some destructive consequences that should be watched out. For example, in western Europe, the society are very concerned about the election and which party dominates in their parliament which is due to the awareness that by involving a large number of ultra-right party members in the parliament would likely to cause detrimental influences to the world; and this is what the history has taught the populace by the second world war. Thus, history does aid people to be clear and not to make mistakes repeatedly.
Finally, the past also contributes to foresee the likehood of the occurrence of any particular event in future. Earlier in time, the American president Lincoln once said: "we know nothing about what will happen in future, but by the analogy of past experience." The point is by delving the patterns and outcomes of erstwhile events can people infer the penchant of the future. For example, in the field of economics, all the economics models are built up based on historic data and specialists, say, the Federal Reserve, tend to review the models and anticipate the overall well-being of the forthcoming economic state in terms of inflation, unemployment and so on which would further influence the private sectors’ invest plan and the public spending. Thus, only by interpreting and learning from the historic data could people get a clue of what is possibly to happen in the prospective sense.
To sum up, it is certainly erroneous to assume that history is irrelevant in forming people’s judgment since the history alone tells a lot about what should be taken into account and which should not. Accordingly, one should study history heedfully, and only in this way the hazardous mistakes can be avoided and relatively predictive information may be inferred.
