Issue27
No one can possibly achieve success in the world by conforming to conventional practices and conventional ways of thinking.
Whether success can be achieved by conforming to conventional practice and ways of thinking or not raises, at the first place, the question of how to define success. What is known to all is that the term "success" can be defined in various ways and so that it has never come to a definite definition. Since the ambiguous nature of "success”, we should evaluate the assertion of the speaker on a case-by-case basis according to the different definition of success.
On one hand, success can be defined as the great achievements in some fields where creativity is demanded and, even worshipped, such as the progress of academic research in pure science, the brilliant strategy for a firm in an oligopolistic market and the cunning maneuvers in arts of war. All the above require a creative sensitivity while deny the conventional practices and conventional ways of thinking, which can lead research to nothing but cliché, trap the firm in a condition that its all strategies can be pre-calculated by its competitors or confine a troop in conventional tactics which the opponent knows well and deals with effortlessly. In those fields, only a maverick mind, even heterodox, could be grant the possibility of success. For example, the contribution of Einstein and the Alliance's sudden strike in Normandy. We simply cannot imagine that Einstein could reach his Photon Hypothesis if he only knows what Newton had said nor can we assume that the German force would be so easily deceived if the generals of Alliance had not presented illusory evidence of unloading their troops elsewhere.
On the other hand, when success is to be both the good outcome of and reward to our day-by-day effort on our works or be harmony and happiness of our life, the position of conventional practices and conventional ways of thinking will totally reversed. You don't need any creativity while typing the documents, cultivating your land or working on assemble-line and what you require is just to conform to conventional practices, by which your effort can be well paid as you've expected. When harmony and happiness of life is concerned, conventional practices and ways of thinking are usually considered the golden rule in this domain, while, contrarily, this time, heterodox thought can be devastating to the harmony of life especially family life, for the reason that other members may brook no maverick behaviors. So, as to the goal involves less creativity, conforming to the convention is always a necessity for success.
After all, everyone has his or her own definition of success which varies from one to another, and thus leads us to decide for ourselves whether to appeal to conventional practices and conventional ways of thinking in our paths of securing our own successes. |
