Admittedly, some people do achieve significant success without entering university or college. For example, Edison, one of the greatest inventors in the world, who obtained 1093 Unite State patents, received only three month formal education and never went to college or university. However, it is rare case. I insist that attending a university or college will benefit more than learning on oneself.

First of all, universities and colleges can offer the students a systemic learning plan and method, which might not be easily designed by the students themselves. As is known to all, how to study has heavy influence on how well people study. A reasonable plan or method might save the students a lot of time. In college or universities, there are many specialists on education, and they have abundant experience to instruct the students how to study efficiently. Also, a chance of communicating with a professor face to face would give the students more meaningful instruction than reading the professor’s books. On the contrary, those students learning on their own probably spend more efforts but gain less improvement.

Secondly, college or university study is beneficial to the students both intelligently and morally. In the majority of universities and colleges, students are required to study many courses outside their majors. Courses such as history, literature, and other forms of arts, can influence the development of one’s inner world gradually. Recent years, some psychologists pointed out that E.Q. (Emotional Quotient) is equally, if not more, important than I.Q. (Intelligence Quotient). Although a student can learn much knowledge on their own, he might lose the opportunities to be educated from other aspects, such as ethical standards or social values. Meanwhile, a variety of activities in universities and colleges is also a great part of college life, such as academic conferences, lectures by celebrities. Students might gain more direct experience from those activities than learning from books alone.

Next, studying in universities and colleges is helpful to cultivate the ability of cooperation, which is increasingly important in the modern society. One of the most significant traits of contemporary world is the explosion of knowledge, which make is impossible for an individual to complete an arduous task. Therefore, the ability of cooperation is more emphasized than ever. During the four year’s study in university or colleges, everyone have abundant opportunities to join in group work, which is helpful to the career of the students.

Furthermore, some valuable equipment in universities and colleges, which is necessary to the study of some subjects, cannot be afforded by any individuals. For example, in nuclear experiment, accelerator, which is the fundamental instrument to the research of basic particles, usually cost several million dollars. Obviously, people who learning on their own will be lack of practical experience because of less chances to do some advanced experiments.

To sum up, although some significant individuals do get significant success just by learning on their own, to the majority of people, it is more beneficial to study in university or colleges. The speaker fails to notice other advantages except for transmitting knowledge during the study in college or universities.

I don't agree with the speaker's statement. Learning in a university is much different than learning at home by oneself. In most ways, the experience in university introduces new knowledge to a man, and help him to determine what he will pursue in his future career. If a man didn't attend a university, he would lose the opportunity to explore himself and be unable to compete with other people graduated from universities in the society.

Attending a university is especially important for those young men who have not yet formed their final goals or have no ideas on by what means they could implement their dreams. If you are a experienced learner and exactly know what you will do, it is just fine for you to study at home. Many scientists do research work at home, and they do well in this way. However, imagine a young man just finishing high school study faces a lot of complicate specialties and a huge number of scientific books. He would be very likely to lose his way in the sea of knowledge. Situation is much different when a man gets into a university. He can meet various kinds of people there. From talking with other people, his horizon will be enlarged. Teachers in university will also impart him most valuable knowledge and could help students find their own directions. All these cannot be obtained when a young man study by himself.

University life not only give people scientific knowledge but also teach them how to cooperate with other people and how to study in a team. In today's society, it always require people to work together to solve a problem since any area in scientific research is becoming so complicate that one person cannot do it by his own effort. Therefore, the team spirit cultivated in university can be very helpful for a young man to adapt easily to his future work.

So, in my opinion, attending university has many advantages which cannot be obtained by studying on one's own. Every young man should attend university.
