Most people are taught that loyalty is a virtue. But loyalty—whether to one's friends, to one's school or place of employment, or to any institution—is all too often a destructive rather than a positive force.

What the arthur stated is largely right.Loyalty is  generally a virtue ,it is a destrutive force in rare cases.
When your friends are in trouble,you should "loylty " to them,just as the proverb says"a friend in need is a friend indeed",especially when they are doing  worthy work,or are devoted to a worthwhile causes. In the some way ,you should loyalty to you family or your school when they get into trouble,and therefore derserve the same loyalty from you.In these cases,loyalty is certainly regarded to be a virtue.
More significantly,you should loyalty to the company,government,or to any instition ,on condition that they providing safety,benefit,or wellbeing to you and to many other persons.In these cases,loyalty is still a virtue,but it is not only a matter of yours, but also an important causes of other people's safety,health or wellbeing,namely,with your help,defend and sustain this good things.
The noblest thing is your loyalty to you country.A country can nerver be wrong,which is patriotism---is always a virtue.
However,there are some rare cases that we must take seriously so that we won't fall into a trap:to mistake your loyalty to a government for that to your country.
A a matter of fact,you should be loyalty to your government only when it serves the interests of most people in this country,and do not violates the interestsof other coutries.When it betrays the interests of the people in the country,and is doing harm to the people of other countries,then you are not supposed to be loyalty to it.The reason is that loyalty to be given to an evil fuctions to add to its evil,and therefore can never be a virtue ,thus a destructive force.
Just how destrutive can it be?History--what happened in Japan and Germany in the last centries--tells us how destrutive it can be.Had it not be the loyalty to the German's government,and to the imperlistic of Japan,aggresive wars they started would not have lasted so long ,which is so disastrous a destrution to the world.Of the mang lessons this part of the history,one is that we should never give loyalty to a destrutive government.If we do,our loyalty is not a virtue,but a destrutive one.
In the some way,we should not loyalty to any one or group of people that have proved to be harmful to others.They include your even closest friends or your relatives who broken the law or violating the interests of most people.At such moments,loyalty is no longer a virtue,but remember :Your loyalty to these people which helps sustain their evil and therefore can never be a virtue ,but it is a evil itself.
In short,it is when you are loyalty to a destrutive force or a person,which is not all too often,is a destrutive  rather than a positve forece.
