1.We can usually learn much more from people whose views we share than from people whose views contradict our own; disagreement can cause stress and inhibit learning.
The speaker asserts that since disagreement can cause stress and inhibit learning, we usually learn much more from people whose views we share than from people whose views contradict our own. I agree insofar as undue discord can impede learning. At some point, however, listening to different ideas and discussing with those dissenters will certainly improve our knowledge and broaden the spectrum of our perspective.
Admittedly, people have a nature inclination to learn from those whose views we share in common, whereas they feel reluctant to think over different opinions or even do not listen to them at all. On one hand, when we share the same views with others, we usually not only feel satisfied and encouraged but also are willing to listen to them carefully. On the other hand, disagreement always arouses stress and even enmity. Consider, for example, during an experiment, when two people want to accomplish certain project, those who are ready to share the same views will definitely attain the results more efficiently than those who insist on their opinions and believe the other’s is totally wrong. The end result is that learning is impeded.
Aside from the abovementioned fact, I fundamentally disagree with the speaker’s claim in two respects. Firstly, though the contradicting views might have certain amount of detrimental effects towards the learning, they give us a chance to focus our attention to some alternative perspectives that we have never thought before. Since the sphere of knowledge of the people who have the same views with us is confined to the same level of cognition with us, such kind of knowledge is quite limited. For example, only by opening their mind to assimilate different views from the subordinates can the leaders in any firm execute new policy more effectively and efficiently. Sticking on their own views always produces counterproductive results.
Additionally, we can see the flaws of our own views by listening to contradicting views, thus enable us to improve our understanding of these views. While we only accept the views in accord with our own, too much self-confidence will lead us blind to see nothing about our own deficiency, which consequently tampers progress rather than helps us. For example, the teenagers will feel a little bitter to comply with their parents’ rational and reasonable but seemingly oppressive rules, then in fact they can find themselves that it is these rules that help them to behave in a gentler way afterwards. Moreover, if we start comparing our solutions with different ones to the same issue, we can get more effective solutions by means of assimilating other’s merits and eliminating our drawbacks, which makes ourselves more stronger in competition.
In sum, while it is more satisfying to accept the similar views, listening to contradicting views not only broaden our ken and enrich our knowledge, but also help us get closer to the truth and better judgement. In the final analysis, the optimal approach is to communicate with people whose views contradict our own rather than only with those whose views we share.
