Bring other fields’ knowledge to our studies
Is there only one kind of knowledge in one field of study? Will the subjects get great advances if they do not absorb others' knowledge and methods? We always ask these kinds of questions. Some people say that there should be clear lines between the different fields of study, while others hold the view that the subjects can syncretize together to make themselves get much greater progress. But which one is better to our knowledge system's development?
There is no doubt that different disciplines are interrelated and that the knowledge of one field can cast light on the studies of other fields. In fact, in every filed, there are lots of research methods, knowledge and thinking ways that from other disciplines. They absorb each other while they are on their own road of development.
First, let's take a look at the use of mathematics. Mathematics is really being used a very broad scope, from physics to chemistry, from statistics to biology. When it is introduced into the field of economics, mathematics really makes great contributions. The economic theories, even the simplest rules, have used mathematical methods. In the microeconomics, we use mathematical methods to explain the demand and supply laws. How do consumers make consumption decisions? How do the producers decide what and how much to produce? And what determines the price of a kind of product? Such questions are answered with mathematical models and thinking methods. In the field of macro-economics, in our analysis of problems such as what policies should the government take to deal with the inflation and in what way will the change of interests influence the of the economy, we cannot be without mathematical ways of analysis and tools. In other economics study of fields, especially the fields such as econometrics and mathematical economics, we use mathematics to solve economic problems and analyze the economic phenomena. And it is the introduction and use of mathematics that give the filed of economics study and research a great opportunity and drive to develop and mature.
Second, in the more social fields, they absorb other fields' knowledge and experience much more and they relate to each other more inherent and tightly. Let's take literacy as an example. Literacy critics borrowed ideas formulated by philosophers to further their studies. When they make research or publish critics, they need to bring forward their views, prove them by strong evidence and rigorous demonstration, and make their own points of views reasonable and rational. The philosophers' thinking ways and knowledge really help them build analysis systems and constructs, and the critics can benefit from the philosophy in the aspect of thinking and expression. The ideas in philosophy can make literacy critics to think from different angles and more in-depth. When they do studies, they can consider from the angles of culture, values, politics, and economics. And their point of view can more incisive with the help of philosophy ideas.
Also, there are lots of intersectional fields that we pay great attentions to study now. For instance, when biology and chemistry met, biochemistry came into being. In this field of study, the content of biology and chemistry are both contained. We use methods and tools of chemistry to learn biology problems, and we have found much that we did not find and know before, which are of great importance to us human beings and to our understanding of the nature and the world. And it provides us with a whole new way to cognize ourselves. Besides, there are lots of other fields like biochemistry, such as euthenics which focus on how to improve human biological construct through the study of environment, and physical chemistry in which we study chemistry with physic’s help. And I believe that more fields like biochemistry will appear.
In the matter of fact, different disciplines have interrelations to each other. We can use other fields' analysis ways and methods, borrow others' ideas, and employ others' tools and models when we do research in a certain field of study. We don not have to localize our attention to only this field's tools, techniques and ways if thinking; what we need to do is that we should realize the need and possibility to bring other fields' knowledge and experience to our studies and research in certain fields, and that we should take actions to bring the realization into reality. Only in this way, our understanding of the world and ourselves can progress. |
