Look at youth to Understand Contemporary Culture
If I say that the culture is created by history, old people will be glad to hear it, since that they represent the history to some extent. Undeniably, culture is formed through long time's deposition. But I am more inclined to hold the opinion that the culture is dominated by the society's youth.
Although the old people make efforts and work for the culture development, they are becoming the marginal part of the contemporary society. Because of their age, their knowledge is becoming out-dated, their ideas are no longer competitive and creative, and their opinions are falling behind the main trends of the society. What is worse is that they can not change and update their minds as fast as the society does. In other words, they cannot follow the footsteps and speed of the contemporary culture. While the old people are falling behind farther and farther and becoming the marginal part, I think that we can no longer say that the main stream of culture are being held in their hands. Just like a book, when we read it, we read the characters and the content it contains rather than look at the margins, since that the margins have little means. When we tend to understand the contemporary culture, we need to find the main part containing most contents, which is not the group of old people.
Then someone will ask:" Then who is the main stream of contemporary culture?" In my opinion, it is the youth of the society.
First, who is most influenced by contemporary culture? Definitely, it is the youth. The young generation is born and growing in contemporary culture, they are influenced by it from their birth. Thus, the culture is being embodied perfectly by them rather than by the older generation. For instance, when China are becoming more and more open today, the culture becoming more and more open, too. While most old people are conservative, the youth are really open-minded and acceptive. Their way of doing things and their trends are reflecting the culture.
Second, the mass media which is the main producer and transmitter of the contemporary culture is actually dominated by the trends among the youth. The television, the radio, the press, and especially the net, are good examples. Just take a glimpse at the advertisements; almost all of them are towards the trends and fashions of youth, such as the cosmetics, the snacks, the toys, etc. Although there are many products that are for old people's use, the advertisements of them are of the style that embodies the opinions, creations and cultures of the youths.
Third, in the economic life, the youth are the most energetic part. While the old people are retiring or becoming less pizazzy, the youth are rising. They are the most vivid and energetic part of the economy. Thus, when they are doing their business, their way of doing things, their ideas and their minds with the culture are penetrating the economic life. As we know, a society's contemporary culture is best embodied in the economic life of the society. For example, if people of a society are always late when they are in negotiation with their business partners, it indicates that the society's contemporary culture may not think much of time. Thus, from youth--the most energetic and important group of the economic life--'s way in doing business, we can clearly outline the contemporary culture of the society.
Thus, if we want to understand the contemporary culture of a society, the most effective way is to analyze the trends of youth.
The old are falling behind, and the youth represents the culture. It is natural, but this phenomenon makes problems. Gaps and misunderstandings become popular. We have known the generation gap between the older generation and the younger one, which is taken by the cultural differences. Besides, there are misunderstandings. Old people and the young think things from different angles, or even in opposite directions, which will bring lots of frictions and conflicts. But actually, maybe they are both right, only because their stands are different. Thus, it is necessary for both of them to understand each other. Only in this way we can build a more balanced contemporary culture.
Culture is changing all the time, while the youth will not always be the youth. Today's youth will be tomorrow's elderly, and today's contemporaneous culture will be outdated when tomorrow's youth look back at it. Thus, in order to understand the contemporary culture, we need to always keep our eyes on the contemporary youth of the contemporary society. What is more, if we ourselves want to keep pace with the change of the world and not to be seen as the outmoded when we are old, we should keep our hearts and minds young forever.
