Has creating an appealing image become more important in our society than the reality or truth behind the image? I agree that image has become more important in the short term inevitably in such a world with an increasing pace of living, especially in the realm of business and politics. Nevertheless, I think that in the long term the substance and fact behind the image would take the precedence ultimately.

The important role of image is particularly evident in the business world. The well-known soft drink Coca Cola is a case in point. In every advertisement of Coca Cola, the feeling of having a drinking of Cola is describes as wonderful and fantastic. At the same time, some excellent advertising slogans, such as “Cole Adds Life”; “Have a Cole and a Smile”; “Cole is it”, are becoming well-known. All these above can make a good “First Impression” to the potential consumers. That is why Coca Cola is popular all around the world. Consider, another example, the increasing focus on image is also evident in the book-publishing business. Publishers are relying more and more on the appearance rather than the content of the books. Most books on the shelf are essentially the same—except the more delicate cover, fresh titles and beautiful package.

The growing significance of image is also evident in the political realm, particularly in the presidential election. With the invention of the camera and the advent of television, politicians have become more concerned about their image, that is well-dressing and rhetorical skill in speech are playing a more central role in presidential politics. In every public place, the candidates try their best to show their charming and energetic appearance and make impassioned speeches in front of the electorates. After all, sarcastically but actually, it is the television not the electorates selects their president. In this sense, publicity is more crucial than the constituted policies and laws.

In the long term, however, the significance of image wanes considerably. Books with inane and meaningless content will eventually disappear from the shelves. Even in politics, less effective presidents will drop the reins of government and give way to the real competent ones. Moreover, in the business realm, an instance that can aptly illustrate the importance of substance involves the portable computers which are designed and manufactured by IBM. Although they are not beautiful and smart because of the all black appearance, they are popular and widely used in a large number of companies and schools all over the world. That is because that the quality of IBM computers is the best.

In the final analysis, both the appealing image and the good reality are important for success. It seems that as our lives become busier, without much time for careful examination, image becomes the main factor for people to make choice. However, in the long term, only the substance and facts behind the image can meet our need and ensure our interests.
