People tend to search for logical or precise measurements as reference points to evaluate how far a field has advanced or retreated, but not all areas of our social life can be measured, or in other word, not every aspect can find measurements as reference.

First, let's take a look at politics, which is a complicated area interacting with almost all other social aspects. How many people can take part in political activities and how much power they have to affect or control the activity can be viewed as logical or precise measurements to evaluate the process of democracy. Crime rate, rate of unemployed, average income of a common family, etc. can be used to measure government efficiency and political feats. We dependent upon these tools to measure the development of politics.

Second, the same things happened in the field of economics, the measurements of which are most obvious and understandable. Gross production and production per day are well used to measure efficiency of industries. The fluctuations of currency rate between different countries and the up and downs of stock market are sensible reflections of economic environment. GDP are widely accepted as a measurement of a country's economical development. Even prices of daily-used products reflect local people's economical situation and state. Economists discover or invent uncountable other formula and relationships to define the development of economy.

Third, when it comes to the realm of arts, things are quite different. It is hard or to say it frankly, it is impossible to find any measurements as reference points. As we all know, there is no unified standard to define what is beauty----the basic concept of arts----no need to say other elements, the standard of value is undefined as well, in fact, the variety and lack of stability is the shape characteristic and charm of arts. No one would wonder whether rock music is more advanced or retreated than pop, because no standard to reference between the two, even the idea of comparing the two seems useless and out of practice. In this sense, no one would bother to seek any measurement or have the feeling of incompletion without them.

Last, in research and education, another important area of social life, logical and precise measurements can be found and used to evaluate the development as the case in politics and economics. Solving the scientific problems, overcoming research difficulties, inventing new apparatus, proposing new theories, etc. are logical measurements in research field. Population of capable highly-educated graduates and average grade of students are used to evaluate educational level. These measurements are indispensable tools in the process of evaluation.

To sum up, logic, precise or careful measurements are widely accepted and used in areas that can be measure in someway or the fruits of development can be converted into measurable things, these tools seldom exist in the area consists of abstract and incorporated things that hardly can be measured in concrete ways.
