History teaches us only one thing: knowing about the past cannot help people to make important decisions today.
---------------------
Do we learn only one thing from history that knowing about the past cannot help people make important decisions today? The speaker claims so. As far as I am concerned, however, history is one important reference for today's people when they make significant decisions.
First of all, the successful experiences in past could help today's people to make wise decisions. In scientific field, by studying history we realize that science and technology are productivities. The industrial revolution took place in England in the late 18th century, for instance, it is the use of science and technology that lead to the shift from home-based hand manufacturing to large-scale factory production and brought about the rapid economic development in England. Similarly, Japan is another representative example which depending on science and technology speedily became one of the most powerful nations after the World War Two. All of these indicated(R: indicate) that science and technology are the impetuses of the development of society. Referring to these successful experiences in past, a wise decision was made by today's people-that is, to try hard to develop science and technology. Today science and technology are growing, with its ever-present(R: never-present) speed. Thanks to the wise decision, our life greatly improved(R: has been greatly improved).
Moreover, the failures in past are also valuable to help today's people to make important decisions. Because they could give us some lessons to avoid the tragedies occurred in history reappearing in present society(D). For example, Minamata disease-a disease caused by mercury poisoning-is one of the well-known environment pollutions, even in current Japan. This is the result of neglecting the environment pollution, when Japanese try to accelerate the progress of economy. Besides, the hurricane occurred in Western America, the desertification matter facing Chinese people and so on(C: the sentence structure may be wrong). All of these tell us that destroying environment would inevitably bring about(R: lead to) harmful results to humanity. Therefore, a wise decision should have been made by today's people to protect environment. However, many nations, especially developing nations(R: ones), do not absorb(R: learn from C: I don’t think you can absorb lessons) these historical lessons. Then what happens? The (A: global) temperature is increasingly growing in the world area(D), ozone layer is destroyed etc.(D), and environmental problem is becoming one of the most severe issues facing people(D).
Admittedly, it is unwise and harmful to blindly apply the experiences in history to today's society. Because(R: since) there are not two completely same situations. Society has highly developed, many experiences in past do not adapt to today's situation any longer(D, C: do you mean there are once two same situation where the experience can apply?). We cannot imagine what it would be to apply Roosevelt's New Deal, which was successful in the Great Depression, to develop current economy? Also, could the traditional moral standards be used to explain the single families? In short, we should analyze special issues in its concrete situations.
(C: So knowing about the past doesn’t mean applying the experience of the past.)
To sum up, I disagree with the speaker's conclusion. It is true that history has its own limit, and blindly putting historical experiences into present society is dangerous. In my viewpoint, however, history is one of the most valuable references, when today's people try to make important decision. |
