Issue147: “Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them.”

This statement is defensible, and it is a bit misleading in itself. When we talk about tradition, we always think of old and outdate matters, but it is not enough. Tradition is the cultural continuity in social attitudes, customs, and institutions, while modernization is the process of industrialization, urbanization, and sometimes democratization. And tradition and modernization is not a mutually exclusive alternative, and even they can never be separated completely, and modernization somewhat is the result of tradition, or embracing tradition. In addition, sometimes tradition and modernization are interdependent and combined. I will put forward my view on this issue as follows.

First of all, of course, modernization is amounting to all of our day-to-day affairs; nevertheless, we can also be aware of the existence of tradition everywhere. In many respects, modernization was evolved from tradition, and without tradition modernization cannot exist. For instance, Chinese modern words are out of ancient pictograph. Imagine, can we discard all our language evolving from tradition only because today is modern times? Everyone knows that would be silly and impossible. Another compelling example is traditional festivals. In China, the spring festival is an ancient traditional festival, when comes this festival, every family will have a big family-union, and hence each family number wherever he or she works, will all come home for the big union. What a warm festival and warm family-union. I think that no person wants to eliminate this tradition because of modernization, and of course, none will say that because we are in the modern time we never need family and relationship. Think about it: would you want to eliminate the tradition festival, such as Christmas, Thanks giving day? I bet your answer will be "No!"

Second, we can never separate tradition and modernization completely. They are combined, and interdependent. Tradition is the root of modernization, and a pure modernization is like a modern rubout without soul. And in the same way, only depending on tradition, our society will be slowing down and the range of our lifestyle will be narrowed down as well. Nowadays with the help of modernization we can transform tradition wider and quicker. For example, Peking Opera is a kind of Chinese traditional art, with new media, such as radio, television, more and more people can see this kind of Chinese traditional art and more and more audiences are increasingly like it, not only domestic, but also overseas. Another example is music; Tan Dun, an outstanding musician, can express this more vividly. His music works combine Chinese tradition elements, and western classic music, as well as modern music elements, and are demonstrated by modern method, such as electrical instruments, and computer mixture skills. And more important, Tan said that his compositions are the combinations of tradition and modernization, without either, his works will be nothing.

In sum, in today's complex and rapidly changing society, tradition and modernization cannot be separated completely, and they are like the roots and the branches of a tree, without one of the other, neither can survive. Consequently, with the analysis above, we can confirm that tradition and modernization can compatible well in today's modern times. And modernization only with the company of tradition can offer us a harmonious society.

Issue147: “Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them.”
This statement is defensible(通过你下面的意思,defensible 正好用反了吧), and it is a bit misleading in itself. When we talk about tradition, we always think of old and outdate matters, but it is not enough. Tradition is the cultural continuity in social attitudes, customs, and institutions, while modernization is the process of industrialization, urbanization, and sometimes democratization. And tradition and modernization is not a mutually exclusive alternative, and even they can never be separated completely(读到后半句不舒服,个人认为改成even should not be separated completely), and modernization somewhat is(somewhat 和is 的位置反过来是不是更好些呢) the result of tradition, or embracing tradition. In addition, sometimes tradition and modernization are interdependent and combined. I will put forward my view on this issue as follows.

First of all, of course, modernization is amounting to all of our day-to-day affairs; nevertheless, we can also be aware of the existence of tradition everywhere. In many respects, modernization was evolved from tradition, and without tradition modernization cannot exist(把前边的without tradition 放后边如何?modernization cannot exist without tradition). What a warm festival and warm family-union.(这个例子和modernization was evolved from tradition and modernization cannot exist without tradition有什么关系,个人认为这个举例不太好) I think that no person wants to eliminate this tradition because of modernization, and of course, none will say that because we are in the modern time we never need family and relationship.

And more important, Tan said that his compositions are the combinations of tradition and modernization, without either, his works will be nothing.(不明白Tan 说的话怎么就more important了呢?)

In sum, in today's complex and rapidly changing society, tradition and modernization cannot be separated completely, and they are like the roots and the branches of a tree, without one of the other, (是不是without each other,我没见过without one of the other,说的不对还请原谅)neither can survive. Consequently, with(换成according to ) the analysis above, we can confirm that tradition and modernization can (缺了系动词be)compatible well in today's modern times. And modernization only with the company of tradition can offer us a harmonious society.(这句话好汉语阿,only with the company of tradition, can modernization offer us a harmonious society,怎么样?)
还有个人人为第二个论点和第一个论点没有太大的区别,改的不对的地方多多包涵。

And tradition and modernization is not a mutually exclusive alternative, they have never been separated completely, and modernization is somewhat the result of tradition, or embracing tradition. First of all, of course, modernization is amounting to all of our day-to-day affairs; nevertheless, we can also be aware of the existence of tradition everywhere. And modernization cannot replace tradition. An example is about traditional festivals. I bet your answer will be "No!" Furthermore, in many respects, modernization was evolved from tradition. For instance, Chinese modern words are out of ancient pictograph, and this process has experienced thousands of years. Imagine, can we discard all our language evolving from ancient, and create a new set of “modern language” only because today is modern times? Everyone knows that would be silly and impossible.

Second, as we discussed above, with the absence of tradition, modernization is not integrated and rootless to some extent. In the same way, only depending on tradition, our society will be slowing down and the range of our lifestyle will be narrowed down as well, for they are combined, and interdependent. Nowadays with the help of modernization we can transform tradition wider and quicker. For example, Peking Opera is a kind of Chinese traditional art, with the help of new media, such as radio, television, more and more people can see this kind of Chinese traditional art and more and more audiences are increasingly like it, not only domestic, but also overseas. And only with the company of tradition, can modernization offer us a harmonious society.

谢谢zhangsx_1982!
参照你的大部分意见(请谅解稍有所保留),重新改过一遍。这样改过以后能看出body1 [modernization 不能完全取代tradition] 和body2 [tradition 也得依靠modernization, 互相依存] 的区别吗?
请各位指点。
