13"Many of the world's lesser-known languages are being lost as fewer and fewer people speak them. The governments of countries in which these languages are spoken should act to prevent such languages from becoming extinct."

Syllabus:

With the process of globalization, we should admit many of the world's lesser-known languages are on the verge of extinction.  Considering this question, should government act to prevent such languages from becoming extinct, I agree in so far as a country’s language should not be forgot and thrown away, in that languages and culture are inevitably related. Therefore, language, as a way to record culture and tradition of different nations, should be saved and protected.

To begin with, it is is no doubt that many outmoded languages have already disappeared from the world in our long history.  Languages, if losing the amount of people to speak them, are doomed to be extinct for the original function of language is served as a communication tool.  In this sense, losing population means this language can not play the significant role of facilitating communication any more, thus become gradually useless and perish at last.  Just as many archaisms or old English such as "thou" is replaced by “you” due to the fact that no person now still use them,  languages, abandoned by people, will eventually disappear from the world and be substituted by more modern languages.  Therefore, it's natural that language can undoubtedly become gradually futile and abandoned at last, without people using them..

However, with the extinction of a certain language, we also lost something more important, that is a unique culture.  Since the origin, growth and distinction of each language is accompanied by the beginning, thriving, changing of a culture, each language is, therefore, a mirror of the culture of a certain geographical region.  Losing a language means that, for one thing, we may lose the way to interpret the literature written in such language and it may be hard for us to understand its culture in the future in that folk customs and native culture often have tight relationship with that nation’s language.  Another reason to prevent the extinction of a language is to preserve the distinct ideas which only that particular language could convey.  Certain Oriental languages, for instance the Sanskrit, a profound language of old Indian, contains words symbolizing spiritual and other abstract concepts that only these culture embrace.  Thus, in some cases, to lose a language would be to abandon cherished ideas and beliefs that can be expressed only through language.

Furthermore, knowing the fact that it is essential to prevent lesser-known languages from becoming extinct, who would most likely be responsible for this nation culture protection, the people, the enterprise, or the government?  The answer is the government because only government can predict the crisis of losing a language, and have the ability to prevent it from disappearing from the world.  With the intervention of the government, we can guarantee this dying language can survive, even revitalize.  For example, Maoris, an indigenous language of aboriginals in New Zealand, are spoken by so few people that this language is nearly on the brim of extinction.  Fortunately, the government realized and took practical actions: to build Maoris school and encourage people not only locals, but also many other residents to study this disappearing language.  Without the support and help from the government, it might be hard to find and understand the culture of Maoris when traveling to New Zealand.

In conclusion, it is undoubtedly a worthy task for government to preserve indigenous language.  By protecting language we could not only honor people’s heritage, enhance our understanding of history, but also preserve certain ideas that only some language property convey.

By protecting language we could not only honor people’s heritage, enhance our understanding of history, but also preserve certain ideas that only some language property convey.
