Facing the controversy between the preservation of historic buildings and modern development, which should we give precedence? I disagree with the statement above that the latter should be given precedence over the former. In my opinion, it is much more important for us to preserve historic buildings than to serve the contemporary needs in such cases, because old buildings not only provide a record of society's past, but also contribute a lot valuable to cultures and economies in contemporary life.

One of the significance of historic buildings is that they are recorders of history and containers of culture, which benefit people in feelings and emotions. For example, XiAn, a city 1600 years old in west China, has a number of various old buildings in six dynasties in history, which represent the valuable records of many historical incidents and preserve the diversity of a variety of cultures handed down by generations. There the old buildings are no considered simple constructions made of cold bricks, stones or woods but more intimate friends to live with, wise elders to respect and even children to be protect. People' lives are tight to the old buildings. It is interesting that until now, many conventional ceremonies are still held in the old streets and squares, where people talk about their ancestors, sing old songs, dance in a characteristic custom, eat traditional food, what a enjoyable time given by the old buildings! In this sense, old buildings have lives more than lifeless constructions.

Another important role of old buildings lies in that they root in the context of cities and provide profits to the development of cities. Every historic building comprises the intelligence and achievements of people, which can endow a city more sense and charm. For instance, Paris is a absolutely charming city with myriad of historic buildings, attracting travelers all over the world. However, twenty years ago, the government encountered a hard problem that how to deal with old building in the city, because some people argued more and more new building needed to be constructed to meet modern development. Yet, others stated that it was the old buildings that made the city more meaningful and attractive, so the preservation of them should be considered first. After an intense dispute, the final decision was to rebuild a thoroughly new city nearby the original urban area. The later fact has proved that through presenting the integrate city context and the unique history, the conservation of old buildings made Paris more charming, brought more economic profits and meantime benefited a lot the new city' development. It is hard to imagine that if the government made another choice, what would happen to Paris.

In conclusion, old buildings contribute a lot to our lives and our cities by providing historical records, containing various cultures and bringing economic profits. Therefore, the preservation of old buildings is more important for us. Of course, we should find a proper way to meet the needs of modern develop
