------题目------
The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries.
------正文------
The speaker asserts that the greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, but not by their contemporaries. In my view, such a claim has merits in some respects while in others it is not the case at all.As I would develop my opinion as belows:
In the area of science, I admit that a scientist's greatness can only be determined by the people after him. Many theories can only be proven by people after, as they have already grasped enough techiniques and knowlege to tell whether the theory is right or wrong, but not the contemporaries who may be limited by the established theories, religions and authorities, and moreocer did not have methods to disprove them. When we look back to history, we would find that many great scientists were recognized as crazy or just idiot in their times. As what they advocated often went against the profits of the authorities or against people's belief in that time. Let us take Copernicus as an example. When he advanced that the earth was not the center of universy, the whole Westen world was shocked, for people belived that human-beings are offsprings of god,so the place where they live should be the center of the universe. The Christians regarded him as a crazy man and forced him to claim that what he declared was totally wrong. After years, when we restropect this period, I believe none of us would disagree with the opinion that Copernicus is a really great scientist for not only his achievement in science but also his courage in speaking out a different voice risking the danger of being sentenced to death.
In the area of arts, it is a case by case issue. Some artists were recognized as genius in his or her times already as their works suited the taste of his or her contemporaries, while others led a poor life in his or her times with nobody realize the value of their works. Mozart is exactly a case in point who was regarded as a genius even at 6 years old, and when he grew up, he enjoyed almost all emperors' mercy in Europe. While Bethooven who lived just a little later than Mozart struggled against life in his whole life. And nowadays, when we listen to the syphony created by Bethooven, how can we deny that this musician is so great that every piece of his works strike usviscerally? Unfortunately, his greatness is only completely found by the people after him, and could not help in improving his life condition that time. When it comes to paintings, you would also find that while Michelangelo, Da vinci and Raphael gained honor and enough finacial prize in Rome, many other painters such as Van Gogh must live on his brother's almsgiving, and gained their names only after their death.
In the business world, it is no doubt that a business man's greatness would be easier to be admitted by one's contemporaries than in other areas. As whether a leader in business is effective or successful is largely determined by if he or she can bring as much profits to his or her shareholders as he or she can.And such kind of greatness in finance can  be viewed as soon as the leader earn large quantities of  profits from customers, and can be viewed directly on the stock market. It would be ridiculous to say that a business man is recognized great after several years of his death, but mediocrity in his day.
In sum, I belive that wheter a individual's greatness can be decided by his or her contemporaries is a case by case issue. It may turn out that , in the area of science it is much accurate for the people after the scientists to decide the greateness of them, while in the area of arts, both cases would happen as value of arts may turn out to be different in different times, and in business world, it is the contemporaries' case to decide whether a business man is great but not the people after him or her,as people may regard him with more bias in other respects not only in business itself.
