55. "Competition for high grades seriously limits the quality of learning at all levels of education."
1教育的目的是什么?
2competition for high grades 为什么限制了the quality of learning at all levels of education.
3对当前这种状况的改革建议。
Looking at the thick glasses, heavy school bags, I feel so sad that the students at present are lost in the competition for high grades deeply. Grades become the only standard to judge whether the students is good or not. Competition for high grades really harms the real purpose of education.
The purpose of education is developing a national citizen who is beneficial to the society, and who has high moral standard, even though in different levels of education, the concrete purpose is somewhat different. Before the stage of graduate education, students are focused on basic ability and social morals developing. Though in the stage of graduate education, students may be asked more about academic ability, moral education is still a basic content of education.
Competition for high grades at present stage indeed seriously limits the quality of learning at all levels of education. Of course, if the examination can test students' ability out in all fields, or in most of the fields, enough to completely evaluate students, we must admit that the competition for high grades of such examinations is helpful, because it achieves the purpose of education. However, unfortunately it is not the case. Today, the testing papers are designed only to check whether students manage the knowledge taught by tutors, and the grades each student get only reflect student's ability in learning, even only the knowledge in one field. Under this situation, overly focusing on competition for high grades disobeys the original purpose of education, and limits students' development in other abilities. Competition for high grades will lead that students may recognize grades are the only thing they should pursue at school time. While they are devoting much time on textbooks, developing their learning ability, they have missed chances to develop their other abilities. Such as the practical ability, which can be developed only participate practice, not only practices at labs, but also practice in society. Without this ability, when students step into society, he will not be a good citizen. In another field, to achieve high grades, students have to learn what the teachers teach, and have to think in the way how the teacher think. That students have their critical thinking, in fact, is undermined. Without critical thinking, it is hard for students to develop creativity, which is very important for them, and which is also an important purpose of education. In addition, competition for high grades has some side effects in the development in moral. To gain high grades, students may be selfish not to share their learning skills or their reference books, which may cause an indifferent relationship among students. In short, competition for grades limits the complete development of students, which is not the real purpose of education.
We can improve a better environment in school to achieve the education's purpose. To avoid the negative effects of grades, the way to exam can be more flexible. For example, tutors can hold a small conference instead of paper test. This form not only can test how well students manage the knowledge, but it can also test other abilities, such as presentation, communication, etc. The way to evaluate examinations also can be changed. Instead of the grades, the tutors can use short paragraph to sum each student's performance in the exam. This new method will give relatively complete evaluate to student’s abilities. In addition competition in other fields must be encouraged, such as competition in sports, competition in arts, etc. Through those competitions students can develop all of their abilities, which are asked by the purpose of education. After all, the grades should not the only standard to evaluate students.
According to the purpose of education, competition for high grades currently limits the quality of learning. We must change the forms of examinations or the way to evaluate students' complete abilities, and we should encourage competitions in wide fields, thus students will have complete development, which achieves the purpose of education. |
