24.The following appeared in a memo from the chairperson of the school board in the town of
Saluda. "For the past five years, Mr. Charles Schade has been the music director at Steel
City High School, and during that time the school band from Steel City High has won three
regional band competitions. In addition, the quality of the music rehearsal facilities and
musical instruments at Steel City High has improved markedly over the past five years.
Because of such successes at Steel City High, the Saluda school board should hire Mr.
Schade to plan and direct the general music education programs for the entire Saluda school
system."
In this argument, the arguer claims that the Saluda should hire Mr.Schade to plan and direct the general music education programs for the entire Saluda school system. To support, the arguer provides the evidence that during Mr.Schade's service as the music director at Steel City High School at?? the past five years, the school band has won three regional band competitions. In addition, the arguer gives the fact that the quality of the musical rehearsal facilities and musical instruments at Steel City High School has also been improved markedly. This argument is unconvincing for several flaws.
First, the arguer has not give concrete facts on how Mr Schade improved the level of the school band of the Steel City High School. If the school band is in a low level before Mr.Schade came, and never won any title before, in this case, we can assert that Mr.Schade indeed has the ability to enhance a school band's level. But if the Steel City High School
has alway been good at music, and the school band has won even more titles before Mr.Schade came, there is no reason to say that Mr.Schade has outstanding ability and the success of the school band should beattributed most to him. For this respect, the arguer's reason is not sufficient.
Second, the relationship between Mr.Schade and the improvement of the quality of the music facilities in Steel City High School is not clear. Does it is for the his effort to persuade the school to buy new musical instruments疑问句么; or merely because the facilities had already beenout of date and it is naturally for the school to buy some new facilities and musical instrument
; or perhaps the school band received a sum of endowment that enable it to buy modern facilities. All this and many other things isare not clear yet, so it is oversimplified to attribute to Mr.Schade' effort.
Last but not least, the arguer makes an unreasonable assumption that Mr.Schade has the ability to direct the general music education programs for the entire Saluda school system.Everyone knows that there is a great difference between direct a school band and give a music lecture. As mentioned in the paragraph, Mr.Schade has only been the music director of Steel City High School, even if he really got great success, which is still uncertain, there is no evidence that he could also successsucceed in the general music education programs.
In summary, as it stands, the argument is not well reasoned. To make it logically acceptable, the arguer would have to give more data and details both about Mr.Schade and the Steel City High School.
