125. "The past is no predictor of the future. "
The speaker asserts that the past can not predict anything in future. I concede(看过全文之后发现只有此处用了 I, 别的地方都是以第三人称评价,所以为保持全文连贯,换成it is true that) that we can never know what will happen after present with certainty. Nevertheless, ( 第一段刚一上来不要用这么强烈的转折)completely advocating the speaker's assertion will unfairly sever the inextricable link between the past and the future. My opinion applies to both individual and society. 个人认为这句思路很好。
怎么读着有些像argument?
At the individual level, the speaker's standpoint has some merit because human beings are autonomous and can shape their own future whatever their past might be. Though the past, such as the individual's background, experience, education level and so forth would (如我没理解错,此句应该算是举例子,改为might. 请注意动词,以免引起误解) be undesirable, it does not follow this person would undoubtedly own a dim future. History is laden with luminaries in this situation, and paragons such as Einstein and Churchill immediately coming into mind. The former had been deemed as clumsy and foolish by his tutor in the elementary school, and the later had been regarded as lazy, undisciplined and good at nothing during his youth stage. However, both of them became the greatest individuals in human history and vividly proved that we can never tell a person's future for certain just from his or her past. (此句话主语为 both of them. 然而,并不是they prove, 而是 it is proved )
However, at times, the past of a person would provide useful information about his or her future. Understandably, some people would indeed exhibit their marvelous talents and abilities at their early age, and it is justifiable to predict that if well developed, these persons will become outstanding in certain fields in future. Thereby, when Mozart began to play piano at three and composed his first music work at four, it is reasonable to envision his prominence in the music stage in future. Equally, when in his childhood, the little Watt showed great interest to a common boiling pot neglected by others, it is not far-fetch to link his future with the invention of the steam engine. In short, the speaker's assertion would be too absolute and therefore somewhat indefensible on the individual level.
When it comes to the social level, the speaker's argument is more compelling for the reasons that with time lapse, the past knowledge and experience usually fail to apply in, and thus could not predict, the future. For instance, a flourishing economy at certain period is no guarantee of the prosperity in future, because the policies that breed the boom might be obsolete and inapplicable to the new coming situations in future. Likewise, the concord between two nations at present is no safeguard to the lasting peace, for the reason that the mutual contracts, agreements and so forth could not solve the new emerging interests’ conflicts in future. In other words, considering the complex and variable nature of the socioeconomic and sociopolitical issues, the past alone could not determine the future trends and directions of them.
Nevertheless, it is presumptuous to conclude that the past doesn't make any contribution to the future and people can disregard the past. A famous historian once pointed out:" Those who learn little from the history will be doomed to repeat it." Accordingly, if completely neglecting lessons and caveats were presented by the past, the similar errors might be committed in future, and under these circumstances, we might be able to say that the past is the very predictor of the future. An apt example to this point involves the Germany government, which, the after the World War 1, didn't face squarely to the its crimes and draw lessons from this war, and ( 这是个定语从句吧, and 要去掉)eventually became the primary culprit of World War 2 once again.
To sum up, on both individual and social levels, the past could not serve as predictor to tell what will necessarily happen in future. Nevertheless, on both levels, the past could offer useful information to understand personal success, and to avoid mistakes in future.
确实写得好,佩服,词语很多样化,举例也很恰当。只有一些小错,可能是写的太快了,下次注意。 |
