11. “All nations should help support the development of a global university to engage students in the process of solving the world’s most persistent social problems.”

Should all nations help support establishing a global university in which students focus on solving the world’s most persistent social problems? I partially agree with the speaker’s opinion that it is necessary for countries to care more about solution of global problems, since all the nations stand on common ground that any benefit or conflict in region also effect other regions, or we can say, it will effect the whole world. But on the other hand, it is not practical to develop such a global university.

Establishing a global university costs more but supply not so much profits as the nations who support it hoped before, in other words, it is not efficient. Associated with economics, so-called efficient economy is to get maximum profit by giving minimum cost. When we consider about the cost, to develop a global university need all nations take out money and also human resource by increasing their educational budget or taking some money out of their national academic institutes. However, does a global university supply more or at least much as a country’s own academic institute does? The answer is not. For instance, supposing the global university is in Asia, a student who wants to seek information about Middle East can only get it by indirect ways like internet, documentary records, and if he wants to search further, he has to fly to the certain place or communicate with the local scholars. If so, why not completing it more directly and conveniently that let the local institute do it? Moreover, although students far from the certain place may give a new standpoint about the situation, yet at the same time, they may be misunderstand since they can’t know it well as the local scholar or even local students.

And furthermore, since the world is consist of nations and world’s persistent problems mostly have regional features, a local scholar can study the problems on which they are more professional and can supply a right direction; as a result, it is much better for solving the problems. AIDS, for instance, as a scared disease, has become a persistent problem in the world, but every nation may have its own features with which AIDS spreads. In China, this disease mostly spreads by blood transfusion, while in some other countries, like Thailand, it mostly spreads by sex. It indicates that despite how serious the world’s problem is, it also should be treated differentiate and local researchers are more professional about that. In addition, when a national university wants to seek international information indirectly, it can do it, as global university does, like from Internet, documentary records.

However, on the other hand, the world has become an integrated one that nations in this web are dependent on each other. So although I don’t agree to establish such a global university as the speaker said, yet it is of importance for nations to encourage their universities more international by communicating abroad, so as to develop the nations, and impel the world’s globalization as well.
       
In sum, it is neither necessary nor practical to establish a global university since it will increase opportunity cost but benefit only a little. However, with the global development, it requires countries to communicate with each other more frequently, especially on academic research.
