“It is often asserted that the purpose of education is to free the mind and the spirit. In reality, however, formal education tends to restrain our minds and spirits rather than set them free.”

Nowadays, the discussion on the education is aroused as the more sights are attached to it. Among of these, the purpose of education becomes the focus of general public gradually. Does formal education tend to restrain our minds and spirits rather than set them free? Generally speaking, formal education supply students fundamental knowledge which help them seek their dreams and free their minds and spirits in the future, although today’s formal education betrays a little drawback during the process of education.

Undoubtedly, formal education always plays an important role in inculcating students a set of basic knowledge, such as mathematics, physics, astronomy, philosophy and the like, all of these pave a road for students to the freedom of minds and spirits. For instance, If Newton were not equipped with the physical knowledge, only finding the falling of an apple from the tree is not enough for him to explore the universal gravitation. Maybe, he would attribute the phenomena to the God’s power or others, just like that Chinese ancestors ascribe eclipse to some fables. If one do not know the basic astronomical knowledge about celestial body in cosmos, or the simple physical conception of force, how could he or she to image the universal gravitation, how could he or she to find out the reason of eclipse. It just like a bird without feather, how could it to fly in the air? So, insofar as this point, formal education play an introductory function for students to free their minds and spirits.

In addition, formal education also inspire students to be aware that there exist varied strong phenomena and puzzles around the world that we can not understand, which keeps them to be tolerant with different minds and to be skeptic about existing ideas. From this aspect, it also helps students free their minds and spirits. When taking the biological course, students will be told that the human brain is an intricately biological organization, how do it control always bewilder human. Astronomical course also imply students that how to form the cosmos puzzle people. These hints give rise to farther deep thinking and research, make students free their mind and spirits.

Admittedly, today’s formal education may be criticized for overemphasizing the impartation of basic knowledge, which might be mechanical and dull, and even result to deprive students’ abilities of imagination and creation if not proper treat. Some content in textbook have lagged behind the development of the world, some teachers’ teaching method have not inspired students’ interest, and some teaching apparatus are too old to be suit for today’s education. All of these need both government and people to improve it gradually. But the main key during formal education is students themselves. Only if students take passionate attitude to studying, they can get enough knowledge from the improving condition of formal education, then they can free their minds and spirits.

In sum, formal education is indispensable for students to get enough knowledge about the world. Although there exist some problems about formal education, we can try our best to consummate them. Only by formal education, students may have ability to free their minds and spirits.
