Issue201. The purpose of education should be to provide students with a value system, a standard, a set of ideas—not to prepare them for a specific job.

Cai yuanpei, the most prominent educationist of latter-day China and the first dean of Parking University, once said, the most important purpose and mission of education should be to cultivate students' wholesome mind and perfect their personalities. The statement above also claims that the purpose of education should be to provide students with a value system, a standard, and a set of ideas. However, so far to my concern, in modern world, when paying enough emphasis on the education of value system and moral standard, the contemporary society endues education with other new and crucial duty, that is, to prepare students for their careers.

On one hand, the permanent aim of education to provide students with a value system, a standard a set of ideas should never be neglected. A value system or standard means people's belief, faith and ideality of the basic value or merit of a person, an action and etc. Once the value system or standard forms, they will turn into balances or rulers in people's heart to evaluate phenomenon and behaviors so that people can make up their attitudes and choices in their lives. Unlike knowledge and skills, a standard or a set of ideas does not indicate what people know, what they understand and what they can do, but shows their beliefs, their desires and their dreams. Einstein said to his students, "whatever difficulties you will meet in the way of science research and exploring, be strong, optimistic, and insistent; dedicate you to serve the society." These would develop into confidence and hope in students’ hearts to lead them and dominate their lives. To an individual, a value system or a set of ideas is the dependence, motive and radical qualification in his/her career and the whole life. Kant once said, only by receiving education could a person become a real person. It definitely and adequately reveals the significance of education. Thus, education should be fully aware of its mission to nurture student’s mentality and help them set up a scientific value system and standards.

On the other hand, modern education also should take into account the necessity of preparing students for a specific job. Education of value standards, ideals, and moral provides students the attitude, belief and confidence, which does not constitute education and is not adequate for students to live in contemporary world. To ordinary people, the final aim for them to receive education is to earn their lives by taking various jobs. Since the competition in the job market is very fierce, graduates are required to learn skills or professional techniques to obtain employment. Otherwise, the education is unpractical and doomed to fail. To the society, education should also meet the demands of the job market. For instance, after the Industrial Revolution, numerous new majors and departments rushed into colleges and universities in order to train the students who can satisfy the demands of the increasing developed industry. The Yahoo Company, which was created by several well-trained students from Stanford University, has vastly spurred the development of Internet. Therefore, job preparation benefits both the individual and the society and should be well developed in the process of education.

To conclude, modern society requires education to function both in providing students a value system, a standard and a set of ideas and in preparing them for a career. It is necessary for educators to make sagacious arrangement to balance between both aspects and combine life preparation and job preparation.

我的意思说 价值观等 不像是学到的知识那样，代表人们懂得了什么会做什么，而是表达了人们想做什么，追求的是什么，而这些是对人的工作和一生都有指导作用的。

呵呵。社会提供受教育的机会而个人愿意去学。这是因为从教育中个人社会都获得了效用。但是二者的目的从某种意义上来说是不同的。楼主可能要整理下关于教育目的的思路。

另外，在美国大学教育是分两类的，在文理学院学习时学知识搞研究出博士的；在职业学校（法学院商学院医学院）是给学校交钱学技能的。从这个区分入手到比较好写教育的目的。

哇噻 好仔细 感激感激
B2 想解释一下 我觉得本身这个表达就很抽象 汉语也不能具体到哪里去  所以写的自己读着也乱糟糟的
而且我的理解是standards , value system, ideas可以是一个思想的，其实广义上说应该都指的是学生的价值观了，信念了，等等这些玩意（sigh汉语都说不好了）。但是一开始似乎没一起说，结果后面就也跟着乱了。还有康德那句话是想说明只有受教育才能成人，而价值观，信念理想等是做一个真正的人所必须的，所以教育要强调这一点。但是缺乏联系了，一下就蹦过去了。
