The function of science is to reassure; the purpose of art is to upset. Therein lies the value of each.

Science and Art, which are both the treasure of human's wisdom and talent, propel the development of our society. Although their function and purpose varies, I fundamentally agree about the statement that science is to reassure while art is to upset. Their value lies in reassurance and upset respectively.

For science, it takes the role of solving the problem and dispels the fear and anxiety in our hearts so that we are reassured. Since human's knowledge and ability is always limited by the time they exists, there are amounts of mysterious phenomenon waiting for us to discover and explain. It is a problem-assure-reassure process because the development of science itself is helical-rising as well as waved-advancing. Common sense tells us we will feel fearful and frightened once facing the unknown world. Science can bring us conciliation and reassurance though the fallacies and mistakes is always accompanying with the so-called-"fact" which we have defined. Take the establishment of gravitation as an example. In the 16th century, Aristotle put forward earth-centered theory to demonstrate the movement of planet. This theory assure the cause and accepted by the majority then. Afterwards, Galileo found some conflicts between the theory and phenomenon and challenged it by inertia. Then some began to realize the sun not the earth might the true center of the universe. Thanks for Newton, who synthesize his predecessors' idea, the truth of planet' movement and gravitation was unveiled. This perfect theory reassure the common. From the example of gravitation, people experienced continuous reassured. It is because science itself is a gradually accumulative procedure. As Newton once said," If I have seen further than others, it is because I stand on the shoulders of giants." Repeatedly to reassure what the predecessors discovered make us know the truth and conciliated.

For art, it upset the tradition, the framework, even the evil in society. From individual's part, it emphasizes the originality and self-mind. The artists are eager to express their own minds and emotions through the rearrangement of color and sound. For example, "impression, sunrise", symbol of the birth of Impressionism, was criticized and debased in its first display in a Salon in Paris. Few persons regarded it as masterpiece but rubbish. However, it was revolutionary since it introduced sunshine outdoor to interpret the nature and express the artists’ minds. Before Impressionism, no genre applied sunshine as an important element in their works. It was upset, but it leaved a new page in the history of art. From the part of society, art agitates its stability. Through art, criticism about the society is expressed to citizens. Sherry Levine, who was a photographer, preferred grotesque images of women to protest the oppression of female gender from the society in law and social custom. Owing to its special media and advertisement function, art reflects social problems and exerts pressure on the government to resolve it. As a word, art upset not only individuals but also society.

Although their function is not similar, science and art pursue the same value--to liberate the human from the bondage of the nature ultimately. People take advantage of science to control the nature to serve them better and longer. On the other hand, people quest for the freedom of mind through art. Science makes us sense and art instigate us enthusiasm. We need sense to analysis and overcome obstacles. We also need enthusiasm to propel us forward with courage. Only when holding them both, we can realize our dream—real freedom.

To sum up, art and science may be the presents from the God. Thanks for science, we are reassured to find the home of heart. Thanks for art, we are upset to break the out-dated framework. Thanks for them both, we are advancing further.


总体感觉开头不知道改怎么清楚的表明我的立场，和题目差不多的重复。所以开头写得很难看，我觉得。。：（

upset我的理解是颠覆
颠覆前人的想法，理念

而科学是不断发现新的现象，而后被解释，而后我们获得安宁。

我觉得如果upset做不安解的话倾向于贬义，如果art的目的是贬义的upset，那它的存在价值就值得商榷了
