Issue32
483 words
A school or college should pay its teachers at the same rate in all disciplines, regardless of differences in salaries for related fields in the world outside of school. For example, entry-level teachers in mathematics and in the arts should receive the same pay, even if outside of school, math specialists earn a much higher salary on average than do specialists in the arts.
What is the purpose of paying all teachers at the same rate for schools and college?I don't see any out-weighing advantages to do so, but rather following negative consequents. As far as most of the real cases, teachers are paid differently according to various standards in a certain school or college.

First of all, schools and colleges in fact degrade the respect they give to the teachers by paying all the same. Different work should be valued different in aspects like the importance of the course, the quality of teaching, the teacher's research papers out of class and so forth. Disparate treatement to teachers can form a friendly and equal atmosphere, and would avoid teachers' feelings of unbalance for their collegues in another field which might, by ultimately arising people's hatred towards the 'equality' in payment, drive teachers of hot subjects go out of the campus for a comparatively fair salary. On the contrary, teachers of not so hot fields would take schools as a safe place because they can get the same salary and there is less competition among peers in the same department. This thought will bring nothing but a degrading of their own academic and teaching standards.

Second, the society pays people according to their work, similar norms should be taken into school adminstrators' consideration. Teachers contribute differently to the school and thus impinge over students in featured ways. For example, math teachers perform a primary status in entry-level students' study while art teachers are selectedly important, therefore, more focus should be put on math teachers and such rules are manifested pre-hand and will be accepted by most of the school employers.Bonus for teachers' research is also indispensible in that, especially for colleges, teachers need to be couraged and pressured to explore further the scientific world and use more of their potential ability to gain advance in academics. From the above formulations it is clear that a single norm of paying would result in negative effects.

The last thing to be discussed here is whether schools are isolated islands in the economic sea of the society as a whole. The answer is certainly 'no'. Schools are only able to function normally as long as they observe the conformity with the economic environments in which one rule always reigns: to value the worth of people by the judgement of their labor. Incontrovertibly, this rule in fact dominates whatever schools and colleges, and once betrayed, there would be disasters to both teachers and students.

All in all, people would not like to see any school or college as isolated from the society in that this speciality might trap schools in a malicious cycle of academic development which finally harms students' benefits as well as the society as a whole. Therefore, schools and colleges can only seek a benign way out in unity with social and economic rules.
