------题目------
It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value.
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
------正文------
Artists, or critics, who give the society something of lasting value?
This question is pushing us to another question: "what is lasting value" something of lasting makes contribution to the society and our human beings which will not fade with the passage of time[time lapse]. like truth, whenever we human beings discover it, it helps us to judge, to conquer the nature ; like master pieces, they make us known that what is beauty and teach us about the world and the society; like architectures, they do not only serve us as shelters, but also became the emblem of the history. in a word, lasting value is the benefit we gain now and forever.[这段大了个外围,我从来没用过这种方法]
[In view of the great number of art pieces that artist have contributed to us, almost no one would deny the status of artists]. Their creations entertain us emotionally and spiritually. when we go to the Vermeer's exhibition, we feel the beauty that Vermeer conveys to us; when we are in front of the marvelous work of Monet's Sunrise, we can feel ourselves bathing in the cozy sunlight of the morning sun; when we are shocked by the character Shawshank's successful escaping, there is a feeling of sheer admiration for his persistence arousing in us. I can never count the enormous great experiences that art endow to us. Artists are really the persons who render us lasting value. And...[这段说了艺术家的重要性,写的不错,但是题目实际上是个比较,在这里闭口不提评论家似乎不太合适阿]
[What about critics, are they really the "the drones in the learned world, devour the honey, but never work" Despite an artist may complain like that, one should not claim unequivocally that critics are of no worth to the society.] Some people may argue, we do not need critics, for the teachers can assume the role that informs us with the back ground knowledge of certain art piece. Have you ever thought that is there any teacher who is more professional than the critics? It is a society of detailed 社会分工[??social status], even the critics are specialized in specific genre. If we put this task on teachers' shoulder, don't you think it's too much? [这段很多问句,没有什么自己的分析,个人认为不是很有说服力阿]
Other people may speak for the Shakespeare and Beethoven, who had been dismissed by their contemporary critics. This is true, but one cannot conclude that our body is white and hard just by a glance of the nail. We never know that because of critics, how many great work of "lasting value" are merged, but we could easily know that how many great artists and master pieces are discovered by critics. [上面的两个例子没有说清楚啊]There’s so many. If not for the critics, it is unlikely for us to appreciate the "sunflower "of Von Gogh. In a word, without critics, there are no such art pieces of lasting value.
[When we think that critics can give some constructive suggestions to the artists, some people will disagree. ]For they think that art is a kind of authentic[aesthetic] passion of the artists, if they listen to the critics to improve their work, this is not real art. In fact, art is not such simple thing as expressing feelings. The key is, this feeling should can[??] be also evoked in the audience. Besides creativity, the artists should know the truth lies behind any great work. And this truth can be drawn from the critics. The building of creativity is no summit, but it should build on the foundation of tools, skills and some principles, which artists can get from critics.
To sum up, any words to depreciate the contribution of critics is unwise. We should pay equal admiration and respect to both the artist and the critics. If not for them, we can not have such a brilliant culture today. |
