Issue22. Many people believe that a few individuals or small groups (family, friends, teachers, celebrities, for example) have caused them to think and behave in the way they do. Yet it is always society as a whole that defines us and our attitudes, not a few individuals.


The speaker claims that not the small groups or individuals like family, teachers, friends and celebrities but the entire society defines people and people's attitudes. In my view, the speaker underestimates the influence of the individuals which is actually as important as that of the society. Both of them are equally essential.

Admittedly, the society as a whole does play an important role in defining our attitudes and us. In this globalized society, people cannot live only with his/her own volition without considering the factors of the environment--a civilized society--which means that what people think and behave should correspond to the morality, thoughts and opinions of the entire society . Anyone who runs counter to the society will be abominated by all people and will become a public enemy, for example, terrorists in the 911 event who had killed numerous innocent lives are now under manhunt by all nations of the world. Besides, laws and legislations which are published by society are used to guide and regulate people's thinking and behavior.

At the same time, individuals such as family, teachers, friends, celebrities and so on also have great influences on the way that people behave and think. When we are kids, our behaviors are under the rule of our parents who tell us the differences of the right and wrong which are deeply charactered in our minds even when we are grown up and step to the society. Teachers, of course, teach us basic knowledge as well as principles of being a person and dealing with the things. During the long period of being students, we gradually form our own value system and the guide line of deed. As one of the famous philosophers once said: It is my respectable teacher that direct me to the way that is suitable for me and help me in possession of my own thinking system.. Obviously, friends and celebrities are also important to form our attitudes.

Certainly, only individuals or small groups but no impact of the society or only the guidance of society but without the effect of the individuals cannot define people's attitudes. On the one hand, what individuals have done are actually influenced by the society as a whole which means without the indirectly impact of the society, the influences of individuals have nonsense. On the other hand, however, without the direct effect by individuals who act as media, people will be abandoned by the society because they don't have the nature to act according to the demands of society. So neither the entire society nor individuals should be neglected.

In conclusion, I must say that the way people think and behave is under guidance of both individuals and society as a whole, ignoring of either of the two aspects will lead to unilateralism. Only knowing that can we do better in the society as well as do more contributes to the development of our living environment--society.
