ISSUE 34
题目:
Instead of requiring students to take courses in a variety of disciplines—that is, courses ranging from the arts and the humanities to the physical and biological sciences—colleges and universities should allow students to enroll only in those courses that will help prepare them for jobs in their chosen fields. Such concentration is necessary in today's increasingly work-oriented society.
正文:
What courses should colleges and universities allow students to enroll?
Should colleges and universities allow students to enroll only in those courses that are related with their future jobs? The author claims so. However, I find it will do more harm than good to students.
Defenders may point out that by dong so colleges and universities can better prepare students for their future career. Admittedly, this is one of the important aims of universities. However, can a student be a good worker 谁说以后都要当工人? enrolling only in those courses that will prepare them for future jobs? It is quite doubtful. First, it is hard to determine which courses will helpful for future jobs, for the society is changing faster and faster, and the information or knowledge that seem to be useful or correct today may be useless tomorrow. Perhaps it is more important for us to command the way of command the way of 怎么理解? learning through taking different kinds of courses. Secondly, many first-year students may have not finally decided what kind of jobs they want to do in the future so enrolling different kinds of courses may help them to find out what they are really interested in. In short, enrolling in limited courses is not enough for preparing for future jobs.
Another important reason for my viewpoint is that the speaker may overlook another important value of taking courses in a variety of disciplines. Many disciplines are interrelated, and we may benefit a lot form the knowledge, which seems, at first glance, have no relation with our future jobs. A doctor may benefit a lot from the knowledge of humanity the humanities 才指人文科学 which allows him or her communicate more easily with the patients. A teacher may benefit a lot from the knowledge of psychology which allows him or her understand the students better. A computer seller may also benefit a lot from the knowledge of computer science, which allows him or her to make more profits. In short, it is hard to determine what kind of knowledge will be helpful in one’s future job.
In addition, preparing students for their future jobs is not the only aim of colleges and universities. They serve more--such as teach students how to cooperate with each other, how to tolerate with different ideas, how to express one's own ideas and feelings, how to persuade people to take their advices, and how to appreciate the work of arts. All of these may be useful in one’s future life, and may be achieved by taking different kinds of courses, such philosophy, anthropology, history, ethics, and art. In short, another more important aim of colleges and universities is to develop a student into a whole man, which may require students to take courses in a variety of disciplines.
Those who still oppose my viewpoint may further point out that there are so many courses which no one can command all even though they seem to be useful. However, I do not mean that we should learn every subject thoroughly and completely, and nobody can achieve that. What I mean is that we may try to understand something in a variety of field, and then we may be able to excel in one field easier. In today’s society, we call for people who are able to see not only the trees but also the whole forest.
In sum, taking different kinds of courses may better prepare a student for his or her future life or career because the changing society, the interrelated knowledge, and the uncertain careers. The aim of a university is not only to prepare a student for his or her future career but also to develop him or her into a whole human being.
