Issue 102 For better or worse, education is a process that involves revising the ideas, beliefs, and values people held in the past.


Currently, there exists a widespread awareness that education, for better or worse, is a process that involves revising the ideas, beliefs, and values people held in the past. Just logical, this argument, however, may be, it only skims the surface of the problem. As opposed to the commonly belief, I advocate that besides revising one’s ideas, beliefs and the values education’s purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one.

There are a variety of reasons why education plays such a role, and I shall explore only a few of the most essential ones.

Firstly, the most essential function of education, at any level, is to develop personality of the individual and the significance of his/her life to himself/herself and to others. This is the basic architecture of a life. The rest are ornamentation and decoration of the structure. According to a recent investigation, implemented by Social Work Department of Paderborn UGH, a university in German, 80% , approximately, students who have graduated from school and worked for several years revealed that during the period when they studied in the university , they essentially learned few about majors. It also indicates that the considerable proportion of teachers in the university admitted that it is necessary for every student to develop into a well-rounded individual, form his/her own value, and make his/her own rather than only study. The administrator of the university points that this figure revealed in the proceeding discussion demonstrates that education especially for collage students means impairing rather than revising.

Secondly, the past contains vast amount of experience that is available in the future and education should focus on. In most circumstances, it is not imperative for one to revise the former ideas, beliefs, and values. As Confucius, Chinese philosopher whose Analects, containing collection of his sayings and dialogues complied by disciples after his death, tell us a vast majority of philosophic theory, put it ( and I paraphrase): “ It is necessary for one to look back for guidance and at the same time cast our nets in the future.” Therefore, these ideas, beliefs and values people held in the past can be seen as a kind of treasure that buried in the river of history. Though, at the mean time, not being as valuable as before, it also represent a sort of possession. Hence, Confucius, revealed in his remarks a universal truth that one should not only revise the post during the process of education, but take something from it critically as well.

On the other hand there exists no denying that education does not need modifying any more. On the contrary, in the era of high efficiency leading to the promotion of people’s attention the practical efforts, everything is altered all the time, therefore conservatism cannot keep pace with it. What’s more crucial, the ideas, beliefs and values people held in the past, at times, are fundamentally wrong and jeopardize the survival of the civilization of the society. Hence education as a way of replacing one’s mind, has responsibility to watch closely on the society so as to ensure its survival on the right way.

In conclusion, it must be explained that no matter how many reasons, it is necessary for them to intertwine to form an organic whole, thus becoming increasingly persuasive than any one of them independently. Therefore, any thinking person must believe that education is not only consist of revising but also inheriting. What’s more important is to cooperate the two together into a better one.

不要撇开题目自己去另立一个主题，题目让讨论的是revise的问题，所以你就要以这个为中心来讨论，如果你不同意题目，那么就反驳说education不起到revise的作用。当然body1,2的内容也可以，但是不要让其占文章的绝大部分，只写一个body段就可以了，否则容易跑题。
