To truly understand your own culture—no matter how you define it—requires personal knowledge of at least one other culture, one that is distinctly different from your own.
The topic of cross-culture understanding is debated on largely recently. As the speaker asserts, one should gain personal knowledge of at least one distinctly different culture so that one may understand own culture truly. This statement seems plausible. However, as we have understood the complexity of this issue, we can find that understanding another culture may help, but this process, especially to a distinct different one is not a must.

One most important point we should always bear in mind is that to truly understanding own culture one must gain real knowledge of this culture first. As a member of this culture, one is immersed in this atmosphere so long that he can see every tiny point of this culture just by hunch. A Chinese writer who lived several thousand years ago, for instance, may never had a single chance to get a little knowledge of a foreign culture, but this does not keep him from master the language freely and smoothly. Another example can be found in an African tribe, where the chief may never witness a person who is not under his yoke, the order of this culture is still neat and the understanding of the chief still wise. So another culture's reach is not essential in own culture understanding.

Another point is that as an outsider, personal knowledge of another culture one gain may not be deep and thorough, which cannot contribute to an objective comparison. A culture is not just reflected in its symbols. For example, American culture contains much more than what the star and banners flag can convey. Unfortunately, when outsiders take a view of a culture, they always tend to focus on those apparent symbols. Therefore, an Indian who drink Coca-Cola everyday and eat McDonald every day and use Microsoft Windows everyday does not necessarily understand the democracy and freedom inherited in American spirit. At this sense, we say, cross-culture understanding may be often misleading.

Also, given the globalization today, a distinct culture may not necessarily offer better understanding than a similar one. To understand this we need go no further to see the great trend of Japan and Korean. Asian cultures are always similar, all influenced by ancient Chinese culture. But different countries have different situation. Therefore, based on similar background and different condition, Asians can benefit a lot by studying each other. The stand up of China, which has gained much knowledge of the countries around, in these years also reflects the importance of similar cross-culture understanding.

Admittedly, totally isolated culture study does not work and cross-culture is always helpful. A serious symptom of isolated culture is ethnocentrism, which may grow into narrow perspective and cultural arrogance if not correctly guided. Also formed thinking style may prevent one to view one's own culture objectively and be forced in understanding, in which condition knowledge of another culture is necessary. By a cursory review of history we can easily find that many evolutions are leaded by those who have witnessed the merits of other cultures. To give other cultures proper respect is responsible to our own culture.

In sum, though it may help, sometimes the personal knowledge of a distinct different culture is dispensable and maybe misleading. Yet to neglect the cross-culture communication is also impropriate. Only in a balance of treating both own culture and other cultures objectively can we gain really understanding of what is imbued into the word culture.

However, as we have understood the complexity of this issue, we can find that understanding another culture may help, but this process, especially to a distinct different distinct应该用副词形式吧,否则distinct 跟different都表示不同的  one is not a must.

One most important point we should always bear in mind is that to truly understanding own culture one must gain real knowledge of this culture first. As a member of this culture, one is immersed in this atmosphere so long that he can see every tiny point of this culture just by hunch. A Chinese writer who lived several thousand years ago, for instance, may never had a single chance to get a little knowledge of a foreign culture, but this does not keep him from master the language 哪一种language, 指代不清楚 freely and smoothly. Another example can be found in an African tribe, where the chief may never witness a person who is not under his yoke, the order of this culture is still neat and the understanding of the chief still wise. 为什么说still呢   So another culture's reach culture 不是人,culture's reach是指谁接触谁啊? 改成So the contact of another culture is not essential in one's own culture understanding. the understanding of one's own culture
