193.The Department of Education in the state of Attra recommends that

high school students be assigned homework every day. Yet a recent

statewide survey of high school math and science teachers calls the

usefulness of daily homework into question. In the district of

Sanlee, 86 percent of the teachers reported assigning homework three

to five times a week, whereas in the district of Marlee, less than 25

percent of the teachers reported assigning homework three to five

times a week. Yet the students in Marlee earn better grades overall

and are less likely to be required to repeat a year of school than

are the students in Sanlee. Therefore, all teachers in our high

schools should assign homework no more than twice a week, if at all.

In this well-present argument, the arguer concludes that the teachers in all high schools should assign homework no more than twice a week. The conclusion is based on a survey of the homework and grades conditions between the districts of Sanlee and Marlee. However the arguer makes several critical fallacies while reasoning.
First of all, it is doubtful that the selective sample of the survey could represent all teachers in the state of Atta. The arguer fails to take into account the teachers in other subjects except math and science. As we know, different subjects would inevitably lead to various amount and features of homework. It is quite possible that the probably fact, that arts teachers would assign much less homework, could lower the total amount of homework in the comparison. In this case, the conclusion that more homework causes the higher grades of students is erroneous.
Secondly, the arguer fails to establish a casual relationship between the amount of homework assigned by teachers and the students' performances. It is a common sense that the grades overall, a comprehensive concept, is evaluated by the students' performances in various areas, and is invariably affected by many alternatives. For example, it is possible that the physical conditions of the students in Marlee is much better than those in Sanlee. In stead of doing much more homework, they do much sports activities after school, which is apparently much conducive to the increase of the grades overall. On the other hand, perhaps the possibility that the educational fund of Sanlee is much less than that of Marlee would directly contribute to the decrease of teaching condition and to the lower grades overall of local students. As the aruger dose not rule out the factors mentioned above, the assumptive casual relationship between the amount of homework and the grades overall is unconvinced.
Finally, the arguer presents a false analogy, since the comparability between the two districts is open to doubt. It is likely that the arguer hastily treats the Sanlee's educational principle that might emphasize specialists as the Manlee's educational principle that might emphasize generalists. If so, the comparison between the grades overall of each district students is totally unwise - let alone about how strongly the results of the survey would support the contention.
In conclusion, the argument is not well substantially demonstrated by the results of the survey. Without improving the sample of the survey and ruling out all the possibility mentioned above, we could hardly accept this conclusion.
