118. "In any field of endeavor—the sciences, the humanities, the social sciences, industry, etc.—it is not the attainment of a goal that matters, but rather the ideas and discoveries that are encountered on the way to the goal."

Although there are many who claim that the process to achieve the goal is more vital than the goal itself, I have the opposing viewpoint that the attainment of a goal is what matters to us, rather than the process.

It is the goal achieved that impels the development of the society rather than the process of the achieving the goal. From the ancient to now, there are many scientists, humanists who pursue success, which lead to the advancement of our world. As we all know, without the invention of the electric light, we cannot live in bright night. During the period that Edison invented light, he experienced thousands of times of failures. Albeit these failures provided him a lot of ideas and discoveries that lead to the final invention of light, we have to be conscious that it is not these ideas and discoveries that ultimately helped us to improve our live, but the invention itself. Another example is the discovery of the new continent by Columbus. Before Columbus discovered the continent, he had navigated for many years, which gave him experience to operate boats and navigate. However, if he did not discover the new continent, there will be no America today, and the ideas and discoveries gained in his former time of navigation are useless not only to his own achievement but also to the development of our society. In short, the goal is what can bring us the substantial development while the process is the effort to achieve the goal, which means, ultimately, we can gain more improvement with the achievements.

As the personal part, the goal attained is also more important. First of all, goal is the impetus of us human beings to improve ourselves and to develop our world. When we were children, we all have dreams of the future, which is, exactly speaking, the goal of our lives. Some of us want to be a scientist who can uncover the real cause of some mysteries in the nature; some want to be a doctor who can cure the patients who are suffering from diseases; some want to be a politician who can influence the policy of the country which can make our society more democratic, equal, and free; some want to be a artist who is the creator of beauty. Maybe some of our dreams change in the process of growth, but we are always growing with a goal, which gives us energy and power to overcome the difficulties and backsets in our lives. To some extent, we can say, it is the goal that gives us the courage to face the unknown way of life and in the end gives us the achievement. Secondly, achieving a short-term goal can give you confidence and energy to pursue some other long-term goals. We want to be successful, and it is the feeling of success that gives us the impetus to keep on working. Without this, we can not be animate and active in the process of achieving goals, and as a result, we will in all likelihood fail. I cannot imagine that a person can keep in good condition in his work without any successful experience for all his life. I think we are all the same that if we experience continued failures, we will see no hope and be depressed, which may lead us to the abyss of ultimate failure. However, on the contrary, when we achieve a small goal, we will be encouraged and work with more passion, and finally, get success one after another.

However, although the goal is more crucial, we cannot neglect the importance of the process to gain the goal. Without this process, we cannot get success and ultimately develop ourselves and our society. We have to move step by step on the way of pursuing attainment. No one in the world can achieve goals without taking effort. In this process, we can get some ideas and inspiration that can help us gain success faster. In my experiment, I can always find something not being considered before the experiment, and after cogitating, some of them can benefit my experiment a lot, which can lead to a quicker result. Furthermore, the experiences gained in the process are also the fundamental elements to achieve success. Also take the discovery of electric light for illustration. Edison tried thousands of materials before tungsten. Because of the failures he experienced, he can finally invented light, and bring us light in the night. In general, we cannot achieve success without the ideas and discoveries that are encountered on the way to the goal.

In the final analysis, a goal is more important, because it is the impetus of the development of our society and the improvement of us, than the process of achieving it, although the process is also important for achieving the goal and success.
