The university is a culture in itself; a particular place where particular
customs are followed, where 'rules' can be invisible and how things
are done is often taken for granted. In fact, it may be more accurate
to describe the university as a collection of cultures, with variations
across faculties, courses and subjects, and it is not uncommon to
find significant differences in the expectations of lectures within the
same academic grouping. It is realistic to be aware of variations in
the expectations as you move from faculty to faculty, course to course,
and even from lecturer to lecturer. This is particularyly important where
you may be studying a subject that crosses several disciplines. An
engineering subject focussed on issues of the environment, for example,
crosses into sociological, environmental and historical areas where
traditions of writing are quite different to science and applied subjects.
