238: The following appeared in a memorandum from the president of Mira Vista College to the college's board of trustees.
"At nearby Green Mountain College, which has more business courses and more job counselors than does Mira Vista College, 90 percent of last year's graduating seniors had job offers from prospective employers. But at Mira Vista College last year, only 70 percent of the seniors who informed the placement office that they would be seeking employment had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation, and only half of these graduates were employed in their major field of study. To help Mira Vista's graduates find employment, we must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their résumés and interviewing skills."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With the result of a recently conducted survey suggests that graduate seniors in the Green Mountain College did better in job hunting than those in the Mira Vista College, and a brief comparison between the business courses and numbers of job counselors in two colleges, the president of Mira Vista College suggests that its college must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their résumés and interviewing skills. At first glance, the conclusion is reasonable, on close examination however, the judgment suffers from several major fallacies.

First and foremost, the survey, which is the base of this suggestion, is not credible due to the fact that it investigate only a selected group of people. Seniors who informed the placement office that they would be seeking employment is not representative enough, for those who did not report their job hunting tendency may also get a job otherwise. It can even be assumed that those who reported to the placement office is the group who have difficulties in job hunting, and other seniors who are confident to get the job would not need to report to the office. The result of the survey that the graduate seniors did worse is unconvincing until the complete data of the job hunting is offered.

Another problem of the survey is that it defines the concept of getting a job differently. On the part of survey concerning the Green Mountain College, no clear definition of this concept was given. Contrarily, when referring to the Mira Vista College part, the concept is strictly defined as "had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation". This certainly will lead to suspicion that whether the students from Green Mountain did as well as the data may imply. What if most of them just got a part-time job, or after a period longer than three month? The survey gives no evidence to measure.

Even though the survey is accurately conducted, and does prove the fact graduate seniors from Green Mountain exceed those from Mira Vista in job seeking, the reason for this, as the speaker offers, is still doubtable. The author simply compares the amount of business courses offered and the number of counselors hired, and concludes it is for this reasons the after graduate performance differs. But factors that affect the job seeking are manifold, for example the ranking of the school will also contribute greatly. Plus, the comparison is not rigorous for the total number of the students is unknown, it is possible that even though Mira Vista hires less counselors but still keeps a high average counselors available to each student, due to the possibility that Green Mountain has much more students than Mira Vista does. Further investigation of reasons that distinguish the two colleges is still needed.

Finally, the suggestion of offering more computer courses is of little evidence. No relationship between the job hunting and the computer courses has been proved. It is possible that Mira Vista is a computer technology school, and has already offered enough courses on its major. Or the fields Mira Vista dabbles may have nothing to do with computer technology. For this suggestion, many basic analyses are to be done.

In conclusion, the suggestion is unconvincing as it stands. To justify it, a more rigorous survey to illustrate the true condition of how students from Mira Vista College did in job seeking, and also some comprehensive study concerning its education content is still crucial.
