Money spent on research is almost always a good investment, even when the results of that research are controversial.
花在研究上的资金基本上都是不错的投资,即使研究的结果是有争议的.


Is it wise to make investment on research whether its result is controversial or not? In my opinion, it really helps to spend money on research. However, in-depth analysis, we should not provide the financial aid if the result of the research challenges the whole mankind.

Firstly, I agree that many researches need the financial support. And we're now benefiting from their great contributions here and there. New products were invented to improve our living conditions: more convenient transportation made us a relaxed life; the significant breakthroughs in medicine field save lives and lengthen our lifespan; a worldwide communication makes us work more efficiently. Moreover, the researches on astronomy or military for example, though may not have an immediate effect on the society, they do make great contributions in a long-term perspective and even facilitate the progress for the mankind as a whole.

However, how about the cost and profit of the investment? Admittedly, in the market economy, we are concerning more about the profit against the large cost. Everyone's willing to make a wise investment. We should balance the cost and profit of the investment. Though some certain research may not provide us a quick benefit, in general, we're looking forward to witnessing the fast and great profit. Furthermore, since the fund is always limited, we must make sure of its opportunity cost. Dropping more money on the research means that less can be put into solving the poverty, disease, sanity and public facilities, which may be more imminent to be settled. That is to say, we encourage the investment on research, but the cost and profit should be well balanced.

Secondly, should we make investment on the research which may arouse controversial result? As I concerned, the research per se is not controversial, but the application of it may cause such problem. So it's necessary and crucial to focus on the application of the research. On one hand, the good application resulting in benign effect on human kind should be encouraged and well invested. For example, the genetic research applying into medical use and try to recover some born deficiency. On the other hand, if the application may disturb the morality, ethnic or even challenge the natural principle of mankind, we have no choice but stop those researches. As an example, cloning human-being is still a debating topic in Gene field. If the research just focuses on duplication without any morality or ethnic concern, we couldn't be relaxed and worry about a disastrous future. So what I concern is that we should support the research whose application will significantly benefit the mankind as its aim.

To sum up, I concede that the financial aid has great effect on researches and some research can't even live without the fund. But, we should make good use of every dollar and be aware of the application of the research to make the world a promising future.

观点:同意前半句, 但对有争议的research应区别对待.

I.  research需要投资,人类已在诸多方面受益.
II  然而投资的成本-收益也不容忽视,以及所存在的机会成本
III 科学本身没有争议但科学的应用可能引起争议,对那些可能危害人类的research不应给予投资或鼓励.

个人觉得写法和我想的差不多，如果是我写差不多也是写成这样，因为好像现在的思路有点定型了，觉得无非就是让步，转折，递进这样子。
而且我写的一些文章“乒乓”斑竹说对事例的分析不够深入，最近一直在练习，看到你这篇，感觉好像也有点哦。呵呵
本人也是一个新兵，不好多加妄评，算是切磋切磋。期待更多同仁一起探讨。
