In any realm of life—whether academic, social, business, or political—the only way to succeed is to take a practical, rather than an idealistic, point of view. Pragmatic behavior guarantees survival, whereas idealistic views tend to be superceded by simpler, more immediate options.

Is pragmatic behavior the only way to success? Should idealistic views be replaced by immediate objectives? I admit the key function of practical point of view in so far as the long-term ideals and dreams should be carried the same weight.

To begin with, in order to succeed, people have to survive in the society, which is based on the pragmatic behaviors like eating, drinking water, and sleeping the like. No matter how idealistic a person may be, he/she has to meet the basic needs to live first. After all, ideals could not be lived on, nor could a dead person pursue his/her success or ideal. That is why we all need to learn some life-related skills from education as well as the various knowledge and values. See Engels, the best friend of the famous economist and idealistic thinker, Marx. Even if he hated the capitalism very much, he had to manage an industry as a capitalist to support his friend, Marx, to concentrate on the research. To some extent, Marx’s success is dependent on Engels’s pragmatic behaviors. Maybe that is not a willing choice for Engels, but a good case in point to illustrate the importance of taking a practical point of view.

Secondly, to realize one’s desire or to succeed consists of the fulfillment of a series of practical objectives. A scientist, who dreams of winning the Nobel Prize, has to learn enough expertise at first, and then dives into his/her research with no distraction. And the final achievements are also based on the results of a set of experiments. In commercial field, the success of a company needs a variety of practical strategies and plans in detail such as how to enter a market, establish the brand, and then expand the share of the market. As a politician, the ultimate goals, or ideals to bring the nation to prosperity, are composed of many pragmatic successes as well. How to win support from the public and what policies are best for the social development and public good should be taken into account. In this sense, the attainments of the immediate objectives and various pragmatic behaviors act as the essential cornerstone in the pursuit of future success, so to speak, ideal.

While it is true that the practical point of view is indispensable to succeed, it does not mean that the idealistic goals are of no value and should be substituted. Ideals provide strong belief and clear direction to personal and social success. The confidence to achieve ideals sparks people's enthusiasm and inspiration to make personal progress, which is the foundation of social advancement. Men's effort to land on the moon aptly demonstrates this point. For hundreds of years had human longed for exploring the outer space. With such somewhat demote and unpractical dream, people have devoted to all kinds of attempts and trials so as to get rid of the shackle of gravity. Finally, the dream came true in 1969. In this sense, idealistic thoughts are the beginning of long-term practical ideas and activities. Furthermore, unless there is a proper direction guided by ideals, people would be easily misled by the immediate temptations like fame and fortune and give up their dreams. Had those so-called idealists, American founders and Mahatma Gandhi, dropped their long dream to heal the nation, the America and India might still be British colonials. As the great Russian writer, Leo Tolstoy once said, ideal is the beacon. Without ideal, there is no secure direction; without direction, there is no life.

To sum up, when leading to success, the pragmatic behavior and idealistic view play equal and somewhat intertwined roles. The former provides basis, while the letter instructs the correct way. To ensure success, neither can be ignored.

改了一半，发现文章的整体结构还可以，问题还是出在对pratical和idealistic两个关键字的理解上，首先idealistic理解为理想，虽然个人不敢苟同，但是很多人都这样做了，包括280，只能无言。。。但是对于pratical behavior，在B1将之理解为吃喝拉撒等人类生存基本行为，并在此基础上将survive理解为人活着。至此应该说并不是很妥当，但仁者见仁，也不至于说不行。但是笔锋一转，在B2又将pratical behaviour理解成为实现理想而要采取的实际行动，至此，文章本身的概念已经混乱，没办法改下去了。。。
