Issue136: 506 words  45 minutes
The absence of choice is a circumstance that is very, very rare.

Do we always have choices in any circumstance? In my point of view, although sometimes we have no choice, this circumstance is very rare.

Sometimes, we have no choice because of the practical conditions. A cast in point is that when we are born, we have no rights to determine such things as our parents, our hometowns, and our citizenship. These are objective conditions which are not subject to our wills and not influenced by our efforts. Such conditions seem to affect our lives much further than we can see it. For example, a daughter of a peasant in the old society will not expect to live as happily and colorfully as a son of a rich family in today's society. No matter how hard we strive, we can scarcely complement the deficient brought about by our birth.

More times, however, it is not the objective conditions but our own subjective elements such as our wills or abilities that make the circumstance seem to be naked of choices. In order to illustrate this point, I would cite a case which happened not long ago in our city: when a malefactor robbed a bus one day, none of the passengers said "no" to the robber. Later when the policemen investigated this case, most of the passengers said they had no choice but to protect their lives at that time. I agree insofar as everybody has the desire and the rights to retain his life security, but considering there were only one robber and more than thirty passengers, I do not think they did have “no choice”. Even if the robber was so ferocious that the passengers did not dare to struggle with that robber, they might maintain their composure and refer to the bag of tricks to win over the robber--then it would be another result. This is the way the game of our life goes. Most of our dilemmas with feelings that we are trapped and have no choice derive from the reasons in ourselves and thus is not a real circumstance without choice.

As a matter of fact, God is always generous to provide us myriads of choices which can be explored by ourselves with wills and minds. We were born without choosing our parents, our homelands, and our living times, but we have quantities of other choices throughout our lives when we are old enough to determine our own destinations. Just as a proverb puts it, “Where there is a will there is a way.”  With perseverance people often achieve more than they expect at first. Despite of her physical deficiency, Helen Keller grew up to a significant intellectual with the help of her teacher Anne Sullivan and, even more importantly, with her strong backbones. In some sense, living in society is a process of exploring the choices God has buried in the future, the result of which is largely determined by the wills and minds of ourselves.

In our daily lives, we often hear people complaining about the absence of choice. As stated before, it is highly possible that such circumstance stem from their subjective elements rather than the objective conditions. Consequently, in such case they should check themselves first. After that, they may find that underlying the so-called "no choice" surface are a lot of practicable choices.

Issue130: 549 words  40 minutes
How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society.

What is socialization? In my point of view, it is a process of cultivating our children with qualities such as teamwork spirits, fidelity to their families, friends and countries, responsibilities to their tasks and so on which are necessary to live in the society. This is no denying an important process, for proper socialization of people in their childhood is not only beneficial to themselves, but also stimulative to the prosperity of society.

As threshold matter, socialization of children guarantee that they can healthily grow up in their society. Man exists no only as respective individuals in their own daily lives but, even more importantly, as members of a certain society. As a result, a person cannot live through without contacting with all kinds of people in the society. In order to become a significant person and actualize the true value of his life, one must learn the basic knowledge and skills to get along well with others and to live decently as a member of society, which can only learned by the process of socialization. A prominent entrepreneur once described his success as follows (and I paraphrase):" I cannot obtain such achievements without the realization that to learn how to live as an effectual member of society is much more important than to live as a single-handed individual no matter how clever you are. It is the efforts of all my staffers, rather than that of my own, that leads to the success of our company." From this we can see how socialization benefits an individual.

At the same time, socialization of children is an effective stimulus to promote the society. Today's children will serves as the main force to develop our society of tomorrow, thus how children are socialized today is so important that it determines the destiny of society in some sense. We cannot imagine a society replete with individuals who only care about their own interests and destinations without noticing other's benefits and the society's destinies. Such a society, if really exists, will soon go to its end because of insurrections derived/stemming from different values among its people. In history, many wise governors laid weight on socialization of children and achieved prosperity of society.

The foregoing discussions have told us that socialization is of great importance either to individuals or to society as a whole, so we should pay enough attention to the process. Then have we done enough to ensure the accomplishment of this significant task? Unfortunately, the answer is "no", especially in some developing countries. In my experiences of these countries, many parents and teachers only put/place emphasis on teaching children how to compete with each other. Without knowing how to cooperate with others, which is no less important than the competitive abilities, children would not grow up healthily. Such means of education might provide society with quantities of individuals who have abundant knowledge and skills to compete to be number one, but can never satisfy society with qualified power to fulfill its prosperity which can only arrived at in a harmonistic atmosphere.

In conclusion, although socialization might be a difficult task considering the various conditions of different regions, it is indeed an important one. In order to faster develop our society to be more prosperous as well as cultivate our children to be better, we should pay more emphasis on this significant task.

A good tool.不如改为A useful/helpful tool. The absence of choice is a circumstance that is very, very rare.

For example, a daughter of a peasant in the old society will not expect to live as happily and colorfully as a son of a rich family in today's society.偶觉的这个for example多余了,你还可以再举一个像遇到Tsunami 这种事情是不可避免的  No matter how hard we strive, we can scarcely complement the deficient brought about by our birth.

More times, however, it is not the objective conditions but our own subjective elements such as our wills or abilities that make the circumstance seem to be naked好象没有naked of 吧,感觉用这个词不好,google上没有 of choices. In order to illustrate this point, I would cite a case which happened not long ago in our city: when a malefactor robbed a bus one day, none of the passengers said "no" to the robber.
