【PART 3】补充搬运EJMR 非意大利人在ESS
“https://www.econjobrumors.com/to ... non-italians/page/3”
“There are 4 ways to withdraw at Bocconi:
- you know you dont do well, hence just leave in the middle of the exam
- you know you dont do well, but only at the end. Then you sabotage the exam, so that you fail, in which case the grade is not recorded
- you know you wont do well even before the exam. Then you retake the course next year, or take the exam in another cycle
- you did not do well in the midterm exam. Then just take the final exam (rather than the second midterm). Then the midterm grade is not recorded
Italians know all these loopholes and exploit all of these to the core to their advantages. I dont know any respectable uni in any country in the world that allows any of these, not to mention all these 4 loopholes.
In other Italian uni if you have bad grade you can even just choose to not record your grade at all. But at least I think this is fairer since international do not need to know this before the exams.
Thanks – this was helpful! I still don't fully understand why internationals don't manage to exploit this system too – after all, they have very strong incentives to do so. Perhaps it is about having a good intuitive sense of how papers are graded etc.”
“The reason why it is advantageous is that Italian will know how to pace their study better. The 3 hardest courses at Bocconi are Advanced Macro, Advanced Micro and Game Theory (it is harder to get good grade from these courses than even PhD courses). For example, one of the students with highest GPA chose to do Game theory, advanced micro in one semester. He observed during his time to see which course he could get better grade for that semester. Then at the end he only did one exam, leaving the other to the next exam cycle.
Me and other international students do not have that mentality. For me I tried both at the same semester and in the end the result was not optimal. This is not to say I am better than he is, but simply that I could have done much better had I known this because the grading at Bocconi is curved: even if you do almost everything correctly, you might still end up with 28(which is still good, but not the best) if others did better.
If you choose to do Msc at Bocconi, knowing how to "pace" your studies is as important as knowing the material.”
“ if you go to ESS, dont be too confident. Take your time to maximize grade, network, even to relax,... I was overly ambitious and tried to rush, doing all the hardest courses as quick as possible. In the end this was not a good strategy. People here are smart, hardworking and perfectionist. Even if there is a 20% they do a tiny little mistake, they will withdraw.
Seconod, it is much easier to have good grade in PhD courses than in Msc courses, probably because PhD students here are terrible (they make stupid mistakes as TA for our class). Load as many PhD courses as elective as you can. This not only increases GPA but also makes it impressive (even though it is not, but only insiders like us know this)”
