Competition is ultimately more beneficial than detrimental to society.
------正文------
The issue is useful, but not a statement of the full truth. That is to say, to a large extent, competition is more beneficial than detrimental to society, but there are still some reservations.

We all know that the market economy is much more efficient than the planned economy worldwide. In the situation of planned economy, all the collections and distribution of goods were ordered by the government, and the merchants had little freedom to determine which good should to produce and where to sell .As a result it caused much forces, resources and money wasted. People began to find other policy that would make the society function better. They tried many ways, and at last chose the market economy, which proved to be an efficient and powerful policy that suits many countries. In the market economy, the merchants compete to each other in order to win their litter space permanently, so the services are going to be better and better, and customers can really feel the position of the "God" ,the old proverb usually put. Therefore, competition ,when carries out in control, funtions to benefit the society.

It is still suitable in democratic countries, when the parties and candidates compete for the power and honor, then the public benefits. The candidates would exert their last effort to stand behind the public in order to canvass most potential vote. And they still would do more pratical things that  not only is good for their campaign, but also meets public's most needs. In this way, competition serves useful to the public or society.

However, admittedly, when competition goes out of the control of morals and laws ,society suffers. Just take a campaign for the manager of a company for example. If the competition goes in a normal and fairly way, it would employ a experienced and talented manager who may lead the company to prosperity. But if someone exerts some illegal way to compete for the position, such as bribing the decisive members of the commitee ,and then he gets what he want, to be the manager of the company. There may be the possibility that he is inept and have no experences to manager the company, then the crew of the company would suffer. This is just a small examply, but can illustrate how detrimental competition causes if it is without control.

In conclusion, we should lead competition in a natural and beneficial way that severs the society best, and everyone of us should compete legally for the things we want.
