Only by being forced to defend an idea against the doubts and contrasting views of others does one really discover the value of that idea.

Does one really discover the value of an idea only by being forced to defend it against the doubts and contrasting views of others? I agree with this point when the "value of idea" is complex. Otherwise, if the idea is itself simple, the process to defend it will not result in discovery.  

Why can the defeat to doubts and contrasting views make one discover the value of complex idea? Because with the effort to persuade those who have contrasting views to accept his/her idea, one will try their best to think deeply. He/she will work hard to collect evidence, examples, and everything that make their ideas sounder. In this process, he/she will be more likely to find many things he/she didn't find at first. I have an experience of this kind. When I was in high school, I find another solution of a mathematics problem, which is different from all the solutions before. Of course, the mathematics teacher and other students do not believe this is a correct solution. To prove it is really a right one, I spend about one week to think of this solution and at last succeed. With the one-week thinking, I find out this solution is not as simple as I thought at first and have a wide use in solving one serial of math problems. Without doubts of teacher and classmates, I am obviously not going to think as hard as I did, and of course not likely to find out the solution's real value.

Another reason why doubts and contrasting views have a significant meaning in promoting discovery of value of complex idea is that, one who can raise doubts and contrasting views are always also experts in the same or similar area which the idea belongs to. For example, in the area of microbiology, there was a defeat in 1870s between Pasteur and Henry Bastion, an English bacteriologist, about whether germs are produced in substances or introduced from the environment. After winning success of this defeat, Pasteur admitted that he had got a lot of useful experiment methods from Henry Bastion, which greatly helped him to make his idea more clearly. This example shows that doubts and contrasting views to complex ideas are also very useful because they are usually by experts.

Admittedly, if the idea is too simple, it has no or less value to be discovered. And who raise doubts and contrasting views are usually foolish and therefore helpless.

To sum up, if the idea itself is complex and of great value, doubts and contrasting views are of course helpful to discover the value of it. Otherwise, they may be meaningless to help.
